Give Me Some Good News
#1

Hi there - I am very happy to have recently acquired my very first 968. Loving it so far. I've got a '94 coupe with 48K miles, 6-spd, LSD, midnight blue with black interior, and pretty much like new throughout. Have put 2K miles on so far and nothing but fun. Did lots of research before buying (many thanks to those who have posted here and elsewhere). I'd say my two biggest worries of owning this car are needing to one day (perhaps) deal with rear hatch glass delamination... or the dreaded pinion bearing failure. But maybe I worry too much? Who out there been driving your 968 for some time without seeing either of these problems? What year and how many miles?

well..............

bad news - hatch is most likely doomed eventually

maybe good news - pinion may never happen to you - there is no rule about it - not mileage - not year - nothing - it happens or it doesn't - it's due to the installation being automated and tolerances adding up in the wrong direction, and not how old the car is or how many miles are on it

drive it and don't worry about it until it happens

Welcome Seattle968 to ownership. Just like any car, there are issues that you will have to deal with, and ways to minimize them occurring. For the hatch delamination, when you open the hatch, do not let it spring up on its own and "bang'" against the strut stops, instead control the movement with your hands and let it gently settle fully open. Likewise when closing, pull it own with your hands on the hatch frame at the outside corners under the spoiler. Both in opening and closing, try to keep the hatch from twisting, hence the procedures. As for the pinion bearing - lots of cars have not had an issue, but if it fails, fix it and get back to driving the car. I hope you find many interesting ways to enjoy the car - autocross and DE are great with this car. An LSD enhances that experience.

Hopefully well see you sometime in the PNW. If you head east from Seattle through the Palouse, stop in Moscow and I'll try to find Harvey and we'll go for a beer or whatever when three 968's get together? There are lots of twisties in this area with little traffic.

Cheers, Stephen

bought mine at 75K, has 93K now, no pinion issues, no delamination. I suppose the latter someday. Just make sure your timing belt is dealt with on a regular basis and consider that even though you have low miles (kewl!) the rubber bits are getting pretty old.

woohoo have fun! I'm gonna drive up to Seattle sometime so we can meet up. There are a few 968ers in Vancouver also.

Any of you 968ers going to the Champ Car Race in Portland June 10/07?

I'm going from Vancouver, BC, just wondered if I should be looking out for any 968s

'92 coupe, 98K miles, no hatch delamination, no pinion bearing issues. It probably also helps to keep the car garaged whenever possible to minimize UV attack of the hatch seal.

I bought mine '93 coupe at 85k miles and now have 160k. The car has no pinion bearing problems.

As for the rear hatch, my recent troubles have been chronicled here. All the coupes suffer some delamination. They may not separate, as mine did, but most squeak, which is a royal pain in the hatch.

The fix worked on mine, so far, and seems to be holding. Hold your breath. A bonus for me is that there's now no squeaking. Love it.

My car has 130K miles and the rear glass is starting to delaminate, but it's not that bad yet. A couple of people have come up with a solution of removing the glass (carefully), and applying some crazy industrial adhesives. They're happy with the results so far, but it's a long delicate process. As for the pinion bearing, mine is still good as far as I can tell; I get the most noise when I first get rolling in first gear. At high speeds the whine is subtle and only noticeable when pushing the car hard past 3rd gear etc.

163k miles. The pinion bearing was replaced by the first owner, who was a dealer manager, at like 50k miles. The hatch is completely intact.

A tip - do not buy new hatch shocks if you can live with old ones. Brand new, stiff & strong hatch shocks apply and constant force on the glass while the hatch is closed, and guess what, the force is in the direction that pushes the glass away from its frame. Not good.

Mom's 968 has 222k miles and the pinion bearing was NEVER an issue. However the hatch was replaced at the dealer by the PO at somewhere around 180k-ish miles.

Thanks everyone - good info and advice. I'll relax and enjoy the car (which has been easy to do so far).
