What was that?!
#1

Driving along, pressed the a/c button to cool it down a little and heard a god awful sound in the engine bay. Car shuddered like an impact.

A/c worked fine; pulled over and looked in the engine bay, everything seemed fine - no leaks.

Resumed driving, turned a/c on and off a few times, no problem. Had a nice late summer drive.

Any ideas?

Has it been a while since you have used the A/C? Its possible the bearings in the compressor are going bad.

no more than a week or so. runs quiet enough when on. I was thinking maybe the engagement clutch?

Mine did something similar awhile back. Awful sound and stutter when starting the AC for the first time each time I drove it. Mine turned out to simply be a broken compressor bolt.

There will be some amount of shutter in the idle when the A/C is turned on but my experience a working system is that its not enough to shake the car. Has your A/C system been serviced in the past few years? A condition like that could also be a clog in the high pressure line coming out of the compressor.

I would take the suggestion to check the compressor mounting bolts. They are known to fail, and you might have had some momentary misalignment of the compressor as the result of a failed bolt. If the bolts let the compressor go, you lose the belt, which is also the power steering belt, and driving becomes much less fun. I had this happen during a hot lap at Watkins Glen.

My guess is the clutch. Just did this on mine and it wouldn't let go and fried the belt. Was a horrible screech as the belt spun on a non-turning pulley.

Thoroughly Check the bolts, as mentioned. If you turn on the AC with bolts improperly torqued, there is a potential to rip the mounting ears from the block.
