What other cars do you own?

Congrats! Let us know if you two find yourselves in the Reno/Tahoe area.

It's been a while since I have been on the forum but along with my 88 Carrera and 94 968, I now own a 69 Corvette coupe with a 427 L36 engine.  Quite a contrast in driving and while I really love driving this beast, it makes me appreciate the nimble nature of P-Cars.

besides the 2020 i3S REX, and the custom ordered 2020 X3M40i, which are really just to drive the dogs around, there are these in my garages

yeah - after ayn's dad died, we had to come back to tend to the mother in law.  just couldn't manage her care from 6000 miles away (dementia and memory loss)

so, i bought some new toys when we got back, and we are living in a country club.  nice, and a lot more convenient than ireland, but i still miss the cleaner air, smaller towns, and the GUINNESS!!!

the ferrari is not as nimble as the 968 was, but a whole lot easier to drive, and a LOT faster.  already had it lowered to ROW ride height, and added some modest wheel spacers to give it a bit wider and more stable stance.

the aston martin is very much like the 968 was, only a lot more solid feeling (could be the extra 500lbs).  not thrilled with the paddle shift trans, but in sport mode it's not too bad.  almost no trunk space though, which is why i got the ferrari.  i can carry 2 sets of golf clubs, a weekend of luggage and the wife in that.

as for the golf cart, took a 2010 club car (all aluminum frame) and had it completely gone through too to bottom.  i tracked down the body kit, had it painted to match the aston martin, installed the bigger tires and wheels, installed a lithium battery, the bigger motor and controller (much faster), added the burl dash and steering wheel, and added turn signals, seat belts, headlights, and a horn, so now i can get it street registered if i want to.  the thing is hilarious to drive.

frankly, we drive the 2 bmws more than anything.  the X3M40i is ridiculously quick, gets 30mg, and has all the space in the world.  the i3S drives for free, since we have a huge solar array.

Well if you get up to Sonoma Co. give me a shout and come taste at the winery I work at. I presume you are in Southern California somewhere. I no longer have family there so we don't travel there, but with the new year ww expect to make a few treks to Santa Fe NM and will probably pass through the area.

getting back up to napa is on our "to do list".  stuff keeps getting in the way, but little by little we are getting clear, and able to enjoy things.  i'm spending a fair amount of time on the golf course, hence the cart purchase.  we paid for the membership, so i might as well use it.  in fact, i need to go change clothes and get out there.  lol

funny - we have begun talking about a boat.  not serious talk YET, but becoming more frequent.  we both love to sail.  just not sure we would use it much while we are still young enough to sail her.  we can't even seem to find the time to go on vacation.

starting to look at replacing the X3 with an electric SUV though.  still have to cart the dogs around and run errands, but hate having to go to the gas station every couple of weeks, and hate the maintenance.  i am constantly in fleet management mode.  i just can't get my head around the fugly grill of the new iX (not thrilled about the price tag either).  we had the etron suv and loved it, but the range just wan't enough, which is why we switched back to our now third i3.  nothing else has really caught my eye yet.  i keep seeing an ad for a car, but i can never manage to latch onto its name.

maybe sell everything and buy a really big boat and call it done?

Opinions needed ;  as I’m getting closer to that “certain age”  and planning to retire soon, I’m looking for the optimum next car to suit all my needs, from practicality , to comfort , to fun / spirited driving when needed .   ( btw, I’m keeping the 968 for weekend fun drives.. that car is going with me to my grave ..).    I think I’ve narrowed just about all choices  down to an Audi RS 6 Avant “ wagon “

Does anyone here have experience with those cars ?    Problems ?   Maintenance issues ?

The only experience I have of one is just how fast they are,

Face alteringly fast

But Im reaching that age as well and I dont really have the desire to take my 68 to the grave so Im considering a Panamera for my dotage

Based upon my own observations, recently retired, everyone thinks they need to make decisions proceeding or upon retirement. Excluding financial decisions, I think that is a dead end. Retirement is merely a next step. Decisions should and will be ongoing. No big decisions the first year unless of course you have to. Unless you have a rock solid plan on what will constitute your daily retirement life take your time and let it unfold. You no longer have to think in 8 hour increments. You don’t have to fill every day all day. I try to do two things a day outside of the house. I’ve not had my garage, more exciting news on that upcoming, so I’ve been forced to follow this strategy. Test out things you might like to have tried but didn’t have the time to before. I’m volunteer teaching low income , special education 4th graders entrepreneurship. I’m having a blast. I never would have even thought about this pre retirement. There is lots of stuff to do. You just have to find what works for you.

DS are you getting rid of your Maserati?

I’ve looked at panameras for years

Makes perfect sense Bob  ( ongoing decisions based on what and how needs may develop, for most anything not associated with major financial plans.   ) .

The Maserati is a complete joy to drive so I was not thinking of getting rid of that one, the Audi wagon is a contemplated replacement for the Grand Cherokee .

I've heard nothing but great things about the Audi RS A6 Avant.  The only negative I've read is that it's pretty thirsty, which isn't surprising for a mega-powerful, heavy vehicle, but I'm sure the Maserati wouldn't be a strong candidate in a hyper-miler competition, either  EmoticonCar

Yeah gas mileage for either the Avant or Granturismo is not for the faint of heart .   Of course once you don’t use them as daily commuters it gets a lot better, but any long trips will no doubt be painful to the wallet.  That’s a consideration, because the Grand Cherokee’s gas mileage is excellent and switching that for a car which costs a lot more at the pump and likely mulch higher maintenance as well, may lead to a “ what was I thinking ?!  “ conclusion, particularly since we’ll be living on just social security and a couple of annuities income.  So I’ll have to start paying a lot more attention to all living expenses .    Sad
