what is wire for?

Sorry for the bad pic. Its taken leaning over front left panel looking down over expansion tank. Saw this wire/cable just leaning against alternator. Wires on alternator and compressor are hooked up. This wire looks more like a cable. No idea where it goes. Everything seems to be working and no idiot lights on dash.

Where does it connect? Just to be clear ( or try), it is the line that is about two inches from the alternator cable, which looks a little bare in the pic. What symptoms might this disconnected line cause?



There is what looks like a bleeder nipple on the throttle body with nothing connected, might it go there?

there should be a vacuum line exactly like what i see in the pic, connected to the port at the top of the throttle body, between the 2 hoses.



however, that one does not look long enough, and i suspect somebody misrouted the one for the ICV.

It is long enough, easily. I will check it tonight to see if it fits. Do you (or anyone) have a pic of their throttle body, just to confirm?



This is not a hose, it's more of an electrical cable, pretty thin with an expanded connector at the end of it.

Are you sure about it being electrical. The only thing I see in the pic appears to be a vacuum line like was mentioned. It is a hard line, so on the end of it is a short section of normal vacuum hose that allows the hard line to be connected to something else. Double check it to make sure which it is.

It might be a vac line. I think it goes on the bleeder nipple on the TB.

the one on the throttle body should run to the charcoal canister on the area near the brake master. that one should run to the ICV. i think somebody was in there messing around and misrouted your vacuum lines.

if it does not go to the charcoal canister, it is NOT the line that goes to the throttle body. the one that goes to the throttle body is routed on the other side of the intake manifold. the one that goes to the ICV is routed where that one is. do not misconnect those. the throttle body port is ported vacuum. the ICV is full vacuum. they should not be mixed up. running full vacuum to the canister can do some really nasty things.

I took a look on my car, and I'm afraid I can't find a line that resembles the one shown in the picture in rl968's first post. My engine, being freshly rebuilt, is very clean, so things are easy to see, but I can't find anything that looks like this line, so I suspect it's either one somebody modified, or it's a year-to-year difference thing.



As a sanity check on my engine, here's how my lines are connected (by me...):



   

Line connected to throttle body nipple



   

Where the line connected to the throttle body nipple ends (it's a check valve)



   

Line connected to underside of intake manifold. It's the fuzzy thing directly behind the throttle position sensor connector in this picture, and it sits slightly behind the ICV



   

Where the line connected to the bottom of the intake manifold ends. Specifically, it's the leftmost line going into the metal three-way connector; it's the one touching the oil filler tube.



Could somebody take a look at their engine when they get a chance and let me know if I have these correct? Thanks.

Here is a pic of mine, looks a little different than yours. Per flash's comment, the vac line on my throttle body runs back toward the fuse box. Cant see what it is connects to unless I remove the plastic cover. My other line runs from under the intake manifold where the icv is located back to the area around the oil fill cap where it connects into a three prong connection. I think my lines are correct.



BTW, ignore the hook up of the hoses on the TB, car is not driven in freezing weather and I don't want to go off topic.

Per Flash's comment, I think our cars' lines are connected identically (right down to the bypassed TB heater lines), and apparently both correctly. You're right that you have to remove the plastic panel to see where the line that goes to the TB ends up, but it's only held down by a pair of 10 mm plastic nuts, so it's very easy to remove. But from your description, as I said, I think our lines are both correct.

What can result if the vac line on the tb is disconnected? Can't really say I had any issues, but have not driven the car much at all the past 2 months.

the canister won't get vacuum, so it won't pull the vapors out. there will be a vacuum leak when there shouldn't be too.

I thought there was a connection in the plenum right after the throttle body but on the underside.

Could that damage the cannister, or worse, cause a safety hazard due to a build-up of fumes, or is there a safety vent, I wonder?
