Race prepped 968 spotted at the Meilenwerk in Stuttgart
#1

I had a Porsche pilgrimgae with a group of guys the weekend. We visited The factory in Zuffenhausen, the researc facilities in Wiessach and also the Meilenwerk where the wealthy store their toys.

At the Meilenwerk I came across a race prepped 968 and thought I should share it with you guys.

Johann - very cool car! Thanks for sharing the pics. Sorry again that the AC controller went to the big buyer.

I've been to Meilenwerk in Berlin - very cool place!

Actually it is not expensive to garage your car there. They take pride in creating a nice mix so if they already have an Enzo they'd rather give a space to an old SAAB or something instead of a second Enzo. I thing the monthly fee was about 150€ - not too bad.

No worries Ben. I actually thought that this car looks a lot like yours!

The car seemed quite light:
- Everything was replaced with lexan except the windscreen
- The hood and fenders and bumbers were glass fibre and the head lights are stickers.

For those of you interrested in the Melienwerk here is the website http://www.meilenwerk.de/

It is in German...but it's all about the picture anyway

Very nice car indeed. What I don't get, is that the owner took a targa model as basis...

TonD, Porsche claims the Sunroof (targa) models actually have a stiffer chassis. Unlike most vehicles, the sunroof 944's & 968's have 2 extra beams in the roof (one in front, one behind) that you wont find in cars without the sunroof. However, they are slightly heavier.

I had the same thought. You would expect them to remove it. This way you have the best of both worlds: the cross bars and no sunroof. But I guess the weight saving was not worth the effort.

@Fox

That's a first for me, and I know quite a lot of folks that race 944s (coupes, not targas cause of the weight and I thought lack of stiffness) Not saying you are wrong, I just need a little more proof to be convinced

Tond, do a google search. All 944 & 968's with a sunroof have 2 reinforcements in the roof you wont find in cars without the targa top/sunroof. I've read in several sources that they are actually stiffer then a sunroof delete car for this reason.

Unlike all other manufacturers, Porsche didnt just cutout a roof.

Johann-

You'd be surpised at how much weight the whole sunroof and sunroof mechanism weighs. Don't know the exact amount, but it's not light. I've read in the past that many racers will remove the whole sunroof system and get the non-sunroof skin and weld it in place. You do get a weight saving effect compared to the standard 968 coupe with sunroof intact and you get to keep the cross bars if I remember correctly.

Something to think about.

You can buy a carbon fibre sunroof insert but I wouldn't know about that since it's illegal in my class....:-)
