Yup been sitting for just about 5 months now...had planned on a putting on my car cover...and then left on business from which it was to dirty to put on...funny thing is it doesn't look this dirty except in pictures....strange and a bit embarrassing. Others will surely ask what’s with the leak...the dumbass oil change shop installed a nylon washer on the oil pan plug UNBELIEVABLE!

But how did it come to this you might ask...well one sunny afternoon while washing and rubbing so tenderly to bring out the absolute brilliance of this fine machine...I decided to take it to an event. Well...as soon as I started the engine there was an immediate tone change in the engine and slapping from the cam cover...I instantly pulled the coil wire shutting down the engine. The picture is what I found upon inspecting the belt thru the inspection grommet.

No Valve Damage!

Those pictures are really small so its hard to see, but the timing belt started slipping I assume? That's a close call if there was no engine damage!

Do you know how many miles were on the timing and balance shaft belts?

Interesting story with this car...I purchased with 12K mile and the previous owner said the belts were changed as the car sat for years...took his word and drove the car another 30K. Was washing the car and started it up to drive home and heard the belt slapping the cover...pulled the coil plug to shut the engine down and had the car towed home. I’ve never run the car hard...no autocross...street racing...so the Germans build them right...and if you listen to your car...it will speak to you avoiding potential catastrophic failures.

No kidding and thru the use of this great site gained some reassurance with respect to a shop here in North Dallas RUF Auto for the repairs...wish I had the space and tools...would have very much enjoyed the doing the repair myself.

It seems you have a pretty good handle as a knowledge base on the 968. I’ve track threads with respect to the timing these engines and looking for specifics to pass to the shop. Do you know what settings other than the vague description in the manual are required? It is my understanding +/- a few degrees is worth a lot.

Tks

it is worth quite a bit - while my engine had been worked on, i am absolutely certain that the timing had never been touched, and was factory set (contrary to that to which somebody else had alluded) - it was off from the factory - that is to say, while still within spec, they were not optimized for performance - after timing the cams, the difference was very noticeable

i've watched it done now a few times, and it's a fairly complex procedure, so i'm not sure it could be easily "passed along" to the shop - figuring out how to describe it could prove problematic

i would contact pete at rs barn, and see if he has any suggestions for you

I have no personal basis for saying this is good or bad - but check this out.
