also not to be confused with the wiper motor, or the sunroof motor..

I got the one from eBay just because it was inexpensive but can always use another since my blue 968 motor makes a very annoying noise when cycling., so wantnto cnage that one as well. I also ordered the Cab cable assembly which is still available from the dealer ( they do have to get them from Germany ) but at only $ 30 it's well worth having the manual trunk opener option in addition to the electrical , IMO.

So, has anyone ever replaced their motor-powered hatch opener with a manual cable? This is something I would be interested in in my never-ending quest to reduce weight.

I did on my project 968. Just ran a cable from the hatch motor area straight down to the drainage hole at the bottom of the left rear storage compartment with a loop underneath the vehicle near the muffler. There are some 944's near me that I'm going to look at and should be able to convert the key to a manual cable release.

I like it! Simple, functional, and lightweight. Probably a lot more reliable than the electronically-operated stock opener, too. Could you by chance post a picture or two? Thanks.

slippery slope this one is.. now I have to get new lift shocks because mine are pretty " tried " in both cars and I still have to lift the hatch by hand after the motor or manual release..PITA. So $ 65 each x 4 , plus two motors ( about $ 80 ) + two cable assemblies ( about $ 60 ) for the manual back up conversion.. it starts adding up.. just to open up a trunk. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/glare.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

had a car in here a few weeks ago with that lexan hatch. it fit poorly and was REALLY hazed. no idea if the car was stored outside, or what the deal was, but rear view was not good. weight loss was not all that much either. unless you were planning on making some aerodynamic exits, and/or were planning on buffing that thing a lot, i think i would look elsewhere for weight loss.

Now we're going off topic but 3M makes a scratch resistant polycarbonate that I intend to play with in the next couple months. Now that autocross season is winding down I will have some time for projects I've been meaning to get to. The more challenging part is adhering the plastic to a metal hatch frame - PCA has essentially outlawed plastic rear windows without metal straps because they often blow out onto the track. My solution for this is to design a carbon fiber hatch frame that completely surrounds the edges of the plastic window, so the final product would essentially be one piece.

at that point the car becomes a dedicated, enclosed trailered, track car, or you plan to change out the unit every couple of years.



i know the "new" 3M polycarbonate. not much better than previous materials, and still hazes and yellows in the sun. also tends to warp at about 140 degrees (which it frequently reaches on a lot of tracks) which would make rear vision less than optimal. i looked at the material when we were gearing up for the new glass wall. to his credit, the rep was actually quite honest about telling me about its limitations.



a lot of money for not a lot of weight loss. you could lose that much weight merely by getting under the car and removing the coating, and yanking the carpet and losing the padding and glue.



lol - it would solve the hatch release issue though.

I replaced the motor in the blue 968 yesterday ( the old one was making a very annoying whine noise when cycling ) , so now I have functioning and quiet hatch motors in both cars. In addition, I got a couple of manual release cables ( it's a 944 part, the 968 cab one which has T-bar handle was NLA ) which run into the rear of the cabin space, ending near the handbrake. So I went to he hardware store and bought a couple of T-bar handles, fitted the cable end loop inside those and now I have both cars with both mechanical and manual hatch release options, so I never have to remove the trunk key hole covers :-) again.

the cab cable does not have a t-bar handle. it's a loop that lives behind the vent in the door jam. it was the club sport that had the handle.
