So now I've found the hitch; it mounts in place of the bumperettes. I pulled the rubber part off (one bolt) but now I have to remove the brackets. They are fastened with a rivet on the bottom (not much room but I can probably get in there with an angle drill unless someone has a better idea.
I can't see top (guess I need a mirror); feels like a screw.
Anyone have suggestions for a better or easier way to remove the brackets?
Thanks

Flash,
Many thanks. I was guessing the bumper cover needed to come off but it looked like a bigger job than 15 minutes but that's OK since the paint is pristine (and original)
My hitch was made by another 968 owner (looks strong enough to pull a tank) and bolts through the bumper to a backing plate the full width of the hitch. Looks over engineered but that's OK with me as I tow the tire trailer to some distant events (e.g. VIR at 500 miles).
Thanks for the help, as always
Bill

I would be interested in some pictures both off and on the car, if you have a chance.

Flash,
thanks; the cover wouldn't have have to come off to mount the hitch except for removing the bumperette brackets. So I'm guessing the cover will have to come off since I don't see any good way to get the brackets removed w/o risking damage to the cover.
MCL 968: I will try to get some pics posted

With apologies for the delay, some pictures. Thanks to a fellow 968 owner who saw my post and had an unused hitch (first photo), my car now has a seriously overengineered hitch that works like a champ. It did require removing the rear bumper cover to remove the bumperette brackets but the only modification is the 2 holes for the mounting bolts on each side. I've driven to Watkins Glen twice and will be going to VIR shortly; the hitch is certainly more than up to the task.

PS there must be a better way to post photos but I can't find it!

Yes: I need to post pictures of the trailer but I somehow always seem to be rushing around when it is hooked to the car. Southsport tire trailer that they stopped making several years ago. Anyone looking for a tire trailer should definitely find one of these if possible: I've had many people admire mine. Holds 5 of my 16x8 wheels mounted with 245/45 tires plus a big toolbox.
Next time it's loaded, I will snap a pic and post it (assuming I can work my way through that process)

Philippe and all,
Finally getting around to posting pics of the hitch that I found from another 968 owner. He stopped towing his tire trailer so a win-win. Hitch was apparently made by a welder: definite overkill.
The only installation issue was getting to the top of the bumperette brackets to remove the one rivet: meant removing the rear bumper cover: what a pain!
