This NY Times article last week details significant changes that auto insurers have made recently to claim coverage related to non-competitive track events. Truth has changed!

IT’S no secret that insurance companies don’t like the people they cover to drive fast. So it shouldn’t be a surprise that the industry has been removing a policy loophole that insured drivers on racetracks.



That has left weekend warriors uninsured if they participate in track days or attend high-performance driving schools. Jerry Kunzman, executive director of the National Auto Sport Association, said that participation at its track events had jumped fivefold since 2003 and that many of those drivers had no idea they were not covered...

There are options though. This place offers single event coverage if your just an occasional DE type person. For $20K coverage it's about $125.

This Rennlist thread on the article has some good information. The bottom line on this, as with so many things, is that you have to do your own research on your own situation and not rely on what you have heard or what you think is true.

we just looked into this before taking the M3 out on the track - one thing i liked about AAA was that they cover DE events - in fact, they now sponsor a track here - they don't cover timed events, but they do cover DE events that have the right components

I hope your AAA review was in the past year. The article specifically talks about companies changing their policy language recently - without informing customers.

just a few weeks ago - we had it reviewed prior to taking it out



definitely not the cheapest insurance out there, but certainly has been the easiest to deal with - you get what you pay for
