Torsen diff replacement gears????
#1

Hi all,

Is it possible to source replacement gears for a factory fit Torsen Diff?

One of the large gears (not the six planetary small gears) is badly worn.

I have managed to source a set new from Porsche but they are silly money

£499 + vat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

About the same as a new diff!!!!

Any body help with my plight!!!

It seems a shame to scrap an otherwise perfectly good diff.

i have been told, though i have not verified the part numbers, that the diff itself is G50 - give bobby hart a call - if you have trouble with that, drop me a line - i can slip in a call later this week

I would try Guard Transmission, http://www.guardtransmission.com/ But, it sounds like a good excuse to get a new diff. The 968 diff is the same as used in the 911 G50 transmissions - so it is not some rare 968 specific part.

When we took my transmission out to replace 3-6th gears, we also replaced the LSD with Porsche Motorsport clutch type unit. It is much sturdier than the original unit.

It cost about $ 1,500 though.

PowerHaus II in Boulder, Colorado (not to be confused with PowerHaus in Scottsdale, Arizona) maybe able to help.

You can find them at http://www.phii.net/

Thanks for the response guys!

Flash,

You are correct it is a G50 unit if you could give him a call for me I would be much obliged as I am in the UK.

I only need the big gear and non of the others really

Eric,

I purchased this to replace my open diff to start with and it didn't look bad on first inspection but my gearbox guy wanted to see what it was like inside and hey presto! It's very worn on the big gear nearest the larger diameter end (make sense?)

Jason,

The reason that I went for the torsen was lack of maintenence, I thought it would be cheaper!!!

Karl,

Great minds think alike! Already contacted them but as yet no reply.

Cheers Guys.

I suppose if I was to replace the gears then I would have an effectively new diff but unfortunately at the price of a new diff as well.

Oh well... can't be helped I suppose.

will do - just a thought though - gears wear in patterns together - check the matching gear carefully - you can expect diminished life of the new gear if you put a new gear up against a worn gear

Flash,

Correct. However, Stephen said that he could turn the other gears around so that they would be working on the other surface.

I was a bit confused about this but he seems to know what he's on about

Guys,

I have decided to get my money back on this and not repair it.

I now have to source a new or used diff.

Anybody know of any used ones around but in good condition?

If not I'll go with either Quaife or GT I think.
