Thoughts on using "diesel" motor oil? Shell Rotella T6 15w40
#1

I recently added an 87 Mercedes Benz 420SEL (gas engine) to the stable. As I am coming up to speed with the car, it seems that a popular motor oil is Shell Rotella T6 (full synthetic) 15w40 which is designed for diesel applications.   Mostly because it has a high ZDDP rating.

I'm currently using M1 15w50 in the 968 which is also supposed to have a high ZDDP rating.   I wonder if other are running Rotella T6 15w40 in their 968's and what your thoughts are using it vs M1 15w50.  Temperatures around here are fairly mild.

Oil topics are usually more controversial than politics or religion. I would not use diesel oil in my 968 under any circumstances.

Let the games begin,

No issues with rotella

It’s used by loads of American car and bike owners simply because of the high ZDDP and Boron, in recent tests the ZDDP quoted to be in M1 is far lower in reality

I use 20W50 mineral in my 68 with high ZDDP, I like good consistent oil pressure hot or cold weather

Waylander,

Prior to switching to 15w50, the 968 used to burn a bit of oil using the Euro spec M1 0w40. Its no longer burning any noticeable amount with M1 15w50.  However, now I am hearing tappets upon startup with a cold engine for several minutes. Should I be concerned?    As I understand it, its the winter rating which is at play here.  i.e. 0W vs 15W. Thanks.   Engine has just over 100k mi on it.

I would think the tappers are now a little worn and if your car is like mine it depends where the engine stops, sometimes I get one loud one if it been parked up for a while, next time nothing

I have used Wynns lifter treatment before with some success

0-40 is not even in the recommended list for cars in Arizona desert,

Cant seem to find Wynns on this side of the pond. Just ordered a similar product by Rislone. Will report back on the results.

Thanks
