I have a howl and I think it is coming from the tires. It’s either that or the transaxle is going south. At least that is what it sounds like.
It increases and decreases with speed and doesn’t change with shifting or anything else. I have a set of rather cheap tires on the car right now. They are Fusion ZRis made by Bridgestone. Any thoughts?
Thanks for your help
Steve

I am afraid that the pinion may be it considering that the sound is a deeper into the car type sound. If it is tires I would hear a change to the tone when I am up near the center barrier wall, I would think.
The car has 78,000 miles on it. Anyone out there replaced a pinion gear on a 6 speed? Is it a pull the transaxle job? As I recall on VWs the pinion was something you could get at without opening up the whole transaxle. Any hope that that is the case here?

Did you mean pinion bearing instead of gear? If that is the case, I just had mine replaced. It required removal of the entire unit and about 3 days in the shop. Just over $1750 total cost.

Yeah, My wife agrees with you on that. She has told me more than once that me and my hobbies are expensive. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/biggrin.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />
