This is an interesting project. For myself however I am not sure having all this info would do me any good.

I am still interested to see how this all shakes out and where you mount it.

i would be interested to know if the sender for the pan is the same operating range and calibration as the sender for coolant. if it is, it would simplify something i want to do.

There's such a wide variety of senders it's hard to say. Which brand, for which gauge set?



I don't have to worry much about the voltage curve, I just need to worry about finding out what it is - i.e. I need a curve provided by the manufacturer, or I need to sit over a pan of vegetable oil with a candy thermometer and take readings. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/rolleyes.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

flash - regarding your question on the senders being the same, many of the senders I'm finding are simply "temperature senders" with a given operating range. There doesn't appear to be a delineation between oil or coolant. Does that help?

no - i was referring to the voltage to trigger a given signal (i.e. 4 volts means 200 degrees).

Can you use the same sender for coolant and oil - identical senders would give identical voltages?

that was my question. is the sender indicated above, the same operational spec as the one used for the coolant?



there is no reason to suspect that i cannot use the coolant sender for oil, and that was my intention. however, if the sender indicated above can be used, it would mean less adaptation. to use the coolant sender, i would have to create a place to insert it. to use the sender above, i already have what i need.

They are the same, and some are even listed as Transmission / Oil / Coolant temperature senders, at least at http://egauges.com/eg_sType.asp.

i think you are missing the detail of the question.



are the values and specifications of the OEM coolant sender the same as that for the aftermarket sender shown above that goes into the oil pan plug?

it was in post #23 - calibration.



as for another thread, i don't want to sidetrack yours, but i don't think a whole thread is necessary. if you come up with the specs on the sender, which i assume you would before trying to mess with it, then perhaps i can figure out the OEM sender. i already have a boost gauge worked out. i also have an SC oil temp worked out. if i add a switch, and a second sender for oil temp, i'm done, with no more external add ons. all pretty clean and stock looking. so, basically i'm looking to piggyback some research.
