Time to Choose the First Gauge (emfg)
#1

OK, it's time to pick the first gauge to be programmed for the Electronic Multi-Function Gauge project, and identify the requisite sending unit.

Make your arguments for or against, and I'll pick the winner. It should be something:

- useful or entertaining,

- not already provided in the average car, (no clocks)

- generally available / affordable as a sending unit.

Let 'er rip.

oil temp. this is the single most important gauge in a performance car, as it tells you the condition of the oil film at the bearings. this is very critical in any car that sees the track or extended high rpms.

vacuum (also boost if a boosted car). this will tell you the condition of the fuel system, as the readings will tell you if you have a leak in the system, which will cause poor running.

air fuel will require a wide band sensor (standard O2 sensors are not accurate enough for the purpose of useful readings). these do not last long though (generally about 100 hours), and therefore not practical for anything but tuning. the gauges are fun to watch, but are not useful without a wide band sensor.

Flash nailed it, in that order. I had a Volvo P1800s with a built B20, and the oil temp gauge was very valuable and useful. Even to the point that I could use it to determine when the engine needed a little oil. Temp would go up when it was about a half a quart low.

I like those three as well.

I've identified a sending unit for boost/vacuum that cost less than $20, but I have not been able to get the voltage/pressure curve that it uses. I also don't know how the connector would match up. I'm willing to buy one if someone can figure out how to calibrate it.

I will also donate an oil temperature probe I have. It has a ⅜"-24 boss that would have to be adapted into the oil drain plug. It is a type K thermocouple and would also have to be calibrated.

I think those a 3 great ones but I have always wanted an SC oil or head temp gauge as well. Ever since Flash and I had the first one toast with no lubrication I get worried.

sc oil temp. would/could you get sc oil pressure?

I don't think there is much S/C oil pressure? When you install and prime the system it seems like there is very little flow drooling down the inside of the oil reservoir.

I count six so far.

 1. Vacuum (most likely measured in Hg?)

 2. Boost (to be measured in kPa, psi, or other?)

 3. Oil temperature (to be measured in F or C?)

 4. A/F Ratio (most likely to be measured in %?)

 5. SC Oil temp (to be measured in F or C?)

 6. Pu$$y Magnitude (clearly measured in siemens per meter!)

boost and vacuum will need to be shown together on one gauge. things move too fast to have them separate. vacuum is in inches mercury. boost is in psi.

a/f would be shown in a ratio or a lambda reading.

as for temps, they should all read in the same scale, whether f or c. since the dash reads f here, they should read f

pussy magnitude cannot be measured with current technology, and continues to escape those of us who cannot understand the attraction to men like leonardo di caprio.

I would be up at Bike Week and the thing would be bangin' away and the wife would be what the hell is that !

'Cause unlike all youse guys I have to take the wife out in the car - after all she bought it for me! lol

If you somehow got your wife to pay for your car, then you sir have so much pussy magnitude you don't *need* a meter!

It would be nice to have all of the sending units use the same wiring connectors - so I'm looking for a company that sells a variety of sending units that are all wired to come back to a common core, like Nippon Defi, for instance. http://www.defi-shop.com/

Or, it would be nice to use sending units that use similar connectors to the ones under the hood? I don't know, those things are hard to come by, those little Amp Jr. plugs - but I see there's an Audi boost sensor (MAP sensor) that uses that connector.

Opinions?

Pussy magnetitude is measured between $600 used car with many miles and Corvette/Hummer, which have very strong magnet. Magnets not sold seperately.

Surely there will be an option to toggle metric and the "other system". I think I recall the world adopting one of them Same with inHg or a column of water, that was for my dad and his dad, lets have a KPa option. I can live with percent, it's metric, it has a 100 involved and it is the only choice for this measurement, I'm just being silly now.

It looks like oil temp is the winner, and initial research seems to indicate the easiest spot to get that is with a drilled and tapped drain plug.

There is conflicting information (and none in the PET) about the thread on the drain plug. Most sites indicate it is M20x1.5, but Lindsay Racing says it's M20x1.75. It looks like most people drill and tap the drain plug to 1/8"x27, like this one on WRXtra.
