thunking when engaging first gear
#1

over the past week or so I've noticed, when engaging first gear, as I move the shifter up from the middle I get a thunking from (what sounds like) the transaxle (definitely the back of the car). Happens right when I make the transition from moving the shifter left to forward.

Doesn't happen every time but seems to be getting gradually louder/harder.

Time for a new clutch? Or something more serious?

TIA guys

My car also does this sometimes. It happens when I am sitting at idle with the car out of gear and then it makes a slight clunk when I push in the clutch and then into first gear. I think it is a case of the transaxle spinning freely and has not had time to stop before I put it in gear. If I take a little more time, it does not seem to happen. Just my $.02 worth.

since the clutch is in the front of the car, and the sound is in the back, i doubt it's the clutch

is the car moving at this point?

happens both from a standstill as well as when rolling/slowing down for a stoplight.

I was thinking that if the clutch is wearing out, it might not be making a complete separation for htat gear. . . but I really have no idea, that was just a guess.

your analysis is good, that will cause the bump your talking about. Worn syncros will also give that feel...

okay - so I drove a friend's 968 yesterday. His does the exact same thing. the clunk is very slight. . . so I am not worried any more.

I'm putting in redline tranny oil my next shop day so we'll see how that affects things. but driving my buddy's car put my fears to rest at least for now. Thanks everybody for your help!
