Thinking about selling
#21

Are they keeping it or flipping it?

Buffin' and stuffin'. They don't keep much and I think they only bought it because it was novel and they knew I had one, otherwise they deal mostly in Jeep / Chrysler / Dodge. They take a flyer once in a while, like this one.

it happens. pretty rare though.

a 92 is the least desirable year. no offense, but based entirely on watching sales prices over the last 9 years, red is one of the least desirable colors. those things would bring the price down a bit, but not to $8k. that was a dump for sure. if it's the one i think it is, i think it saw storm damage, and was pretty rough, even for that low mileage.

it will be interesting to see what happens with the car

Really? Wow, I'm shocked. I think there should be an amendment to the constitution that all sports/GT cars must be red. Nothing snaps my head around in the automotive world like a red sports car. Other colors (including slate gray!) have grown on me over the years, but red will always far and away be my favorite car color.

I love red cars - I am surprised to hear that opinion...Actually Silver is one of my least favorite car colors, but beggars can't be choosey...yada yada yada...

i agree. i have always loved red cars, and especially small sports cars. many of mine were red, and if they weren't, i painted a number of them red.

when i first started looking at 968s i was looking at red cars (though the wife wanted midnight blue). i stopped looking at red ones though, as soon as i saw the first one in person. i'm not sure what it was, but it just didn't look right. i think it may be the piping. not sure.

anyway, in watching the sales of these cars for the past 9 years, white and red have commanded lower prices than other colors, with a few exceptions of extremely low mileage cars.

So they paid 8K....I wonder what they think they can make on it - that would be the figure of interest here.

Yes, 8K is the auction price. Surprisingly he said he had seen about eight 968's go through the local Manheim auctions in recent months.

They paid 8k, but what kind of receipts did it have, how much work must be done, I would not call it a bargain? these cars can be deep money pits and regardless of mileage, age is no friend and repairs are not cheap. The only thing low mileage probably guarantees you is a good interior, assuming it wasn't baking in the sun, and a few less stone chips. Knowing what I know now, I would not touch a 968 above $5k regardless of mileage, unless it had a stack of receipts showing major work having been done in recent years.

Not sure that many 968's have gone through Manheim lately, at least not sold.

The red convertible with tiptronic you describe has 38,244 miles, and it is registered at Manheim today for sale at Manheim Albany. They must be flipping it, and it is a Chrysler store selling it. Last 6 of VIN 840337.

I will watch for results.

ah - it's a tip - that knocks $3k off the value right off.

Yes, they CAN be, but I wonder if that's the exception or the rule.. For example, I bought mine ten+ years ago with 58 K miles on it. It had no maintenance records the PO said that he had not replaced any parts up to that point, just had the typical scheduled maintenance done. BUT, it did have a pinion bearing defect, so I had that repaired However, other than the pinion, in the last 19 years and at the current 115 k miles on it the only money spent on repairs ( I'm not including the timing belt break, that was entirely my fault ) was for 1) a starter 2) a clutch hose, 3) a DME relay, and 4) set of casters 5) a heater control valve.

That's it. And I know a bunch of other owners who have had similar experiences with their " bulletproof" 968s. So I think with these cars it's a toss-up and you'll never know what you end up with regardless of its past preventive maintenance history. Just my $ .02

That's exactly why receipts are needed, you don't know which car you'll get and because of that, you have to knock at least 5k off IMO.

If the car has seen any track time, receipts are even more critical.

that would hold true with most cars out there, but a low mileage car does not generally need all that much. belts, hoses, fluids and you're good to go. there just won't be that much else to do, even if you wanted to.

Yup, it's back on Manheim, just logged in and checked it out. I'm not 100% sure how the website works, I usually just go over to the auction site. He said it was at the body shop last night, I wonder if they found out about the flood damage, if this is the same car?

Interesting there r a lot of flood cars out there for sale. Looked at a 2011 ford ranger for sale at a dealer and there was no doubt it was a flood truck, rust every where and the smell of mildew. The salesman said it was "from when they shampooed the rug it didn't dry fast enough" where do they come up with this stuff???

lol - it's the same place as those turbo guys who say "it just needs a little more tuning". i think you can buy a lame excuse online now, complete with a certificate of authenticity, signed by a nigerian prince, for about $20
