The joy of owning a 1994 968
#1

I have now had ownership of my 1994 Convertible Amethyst Metallic 968 for 5 years. Yes, it does not sound much to some of you.,I know. But let me tell you what a ride it has been. The Dazzler was delivered in Joplin MO on December 27, 1993 as a C2S (Color to sample). The two owners before me took excellent care of  her over the years. I found her in Sacramento in the spring of 2015. I had been looking for one for a long time. She stood out dramatically on the sales floor. It took a 30 min test to make up my mind.

Today 5 years later she has performed flawlessly. Only one repair. The starter motor. All other expenses are in maintenance. Belts, clutch, tires..

All I can say is what a ride she has been the last few years.

Nice story, and beautiful 968!  I'm only a year into my ownership, but hope my next 4 go as well as yours! ;-)

It looks better in person, and Kaj drives it like Porsche intended. It also serves as a great wine hauler!

Undoubtedly a glorious colour and quite obviously in good condition.  I have to say that my white 968 is a tad boring, but it does radiate healthily when the sun shines, and if having a white 968 is all I have to complain about then life is indeed good!

There were two different whites, I believe ... which one do you have ?

just back from a last gig before confinement, will edit this when I look at my specs ....

edit .... mine is L908 which is the standard GPWhite.

I looked up on line and found this (you need to spell colour correctly Big Grin ) :

.pdf 968 - Overview Paint Colours.pdf Size: 31.04 KB  Downloads: 8

If you look towards the bottom of the first page you will find two codes for PG white.   U1 92-95, WU2 94-95.  At the bottom of the second page you will find the key indicating W as water-based paint, which I guess was only available during the final two years of manufacture.

I could be wrong .., many, many years ago when we had the local ( northern Ca. only ) get-togethers there were two white 968s and the color was distinctively different between the two; one was brilliant white, the other was more of an eggshell / off-white . It wasn’t a faded paint, nor dirty , lol , both were in excellent condition. I recall asking about that and one of the owners said that the 968 did have two different whites, but now I’m wondering if that’s correct , or maybe one was from a different paint dye lot in a different year  ?!   Just like the midnight blue 968 , there are two slightly different shades of that ( different years - the factory used another dye lot ) but those are much closer than the two whites I’ve seen.

Im sure there is a colours sheet on the USA 968 register pages

The only other explanation is a C2S colour

See my post above .... I guess the water-based paint gives a different "depth" than the oil-based.

Very interesting info, thanks both for posting those links.  So the depth, hue, etc. could indeed vary based on the type of paint they used in any given production year .  Which probably explains the two midnight blue shades, ( hmm, now I’m thinking there may be similar small differences in a bunch of other colors ).  However, the two whites had a munch more pronounced difference, so it might have been the water vs oil based paints, and it’s more evident in the white color than others ( ? ). Could also be that non-metallic paint colors show that difference more so than metallic ones which mask the hue to some extent .   Both owners presumed there were two completely different factory whites, one seems more convinced than the other,  since even from a < 50 ft. distance you could easily tell a distinct difference.

Maybe someone with more automotive paint experience than I have can comment, but in general, an oil based paint/stain/urathane will age to a warmer hue, showing more yellow. I wouldnt be surprised if the eggshell car was the oil based paint.

It seems like you are still in contact DS, maybe ask them to take a look at their colour code.  It will be in their service log book or, if they don't have the original log, I believe there's a sticker near the fuse-box.  And yes, "W" appears many times in that list as does 1 and 2 (stage processes) so you are probably correct that there will be variations in a number of colours.  Next time you guys have the opportunity to meet up, maybe get the "same" coloured cars to park along side each other.

Good comment Carl .... so the colours may actually have started out the same in 199X, but 25 years later the type of paint used is being revealed.

Have a good weekend y'all.

That explains a lot. I have a late 91, 92 model year midnight blue metallic cab, and when I am parked next to a friend's midnight blue metallic cab the differences in the colors are quite obvious. His is a later car and mine was the first month of production, but they are both listed as having the same exterior color.

Me ?   No, I haven’t seen or stayed in touch with either one for at least 15 years, probably longer .  Incidentally,  one car was a coupe, the other a cab, and although not sure, I think they’re were different years , but I do remember the coupe was a 92. I stayed in touch with the coupe owner for several years longer .  Side note : the cab owner had an accident where the car slipped into a side of the road ditch and rolled over, completely !  Car was totaled of course, but he came out of it without as much as a scratch or a bruise .  How anyone can escape without any injury in a stock 968 cab rollover,  ( surely one would expect decapitation ) , without a roll bar in it , I still can’t figure out to this day but we were all thrilled to hear it .

The coupe cabin is very strong. Perhaps the cab is the same. Unfortunately I know this from experience.

Agreed nor am I recommending it! It was somewhat fascinating in a perverse way though. Learned my lesson and now a nascar cage has been installed to protect all around plus much importantly the sides.
