For as long as I've had my car, I've been puzzled by a hunting idle ... despite all the usual tune-up stuff, the tach needle has always drifted up and back down. Well, I finally found the cause ... a disintegrating vacuum hose. So last night, I replaced it and each of the other hose sections I could easily reach (these just join the black plastic tubing to the various connection points).
Result? The hunt(ing) idle is now over. Apparently the idle speed controller was trying to compensate for the effects of the leak by continually changing the idle.
When I get some more time, I'm going to ferret out the rest of these things (the ones that are hard to reach), and probably also the three-way connections on the back of the engine, so that everything is new.
Don't know why I didn't think of this last year when I changed my heater hoses. Anything rubber connected to the engine of an 11 year old car is definitely ready to be changed!
