Hello,

I've a strange noise that occurs after some miles. It's not from the engine and I thought it was from the rear right brake. But ... after complete overhaul of the rear brakes, the noise still remains. It is in frequence with the wheel rotation and sounds like something touches the metal shield beside the brake rotor for +/- halve a turn. The noise is strong when braking on engine f.ex. in 2nd gear at 30 mph and losing accelerator. When holding down the clutch, the noise stops. My mechanic is "thinking" that 1 silent bloc of engine is out and therefor the enginebloc is pending a little towards passenger side. But perhaps the sound comes from a front brake, but then I don't understand that the noise stops when using clutch. Does anyone of you have a good idea of the cause.

Thanks, Rudolf / Belgium

Welcome Rudolf...

At first I thought perhaps it was a park brake shoe that was touching. However if the noise stops with the clutch engaged, it may be a torque tube bearing. The driveshaft is unloaded when disengaged.

Is the transaxle in neutral when the noise stops? If so, the d/shaft will not be rotating at all. Let's hope it's not the torque tube, it's not easy to service ...

Hello, thanks for the idea's.

Still in second gear with clutchpedal pushed down, the noise stops --> so I do hope it's not the driveshaft.

But when using the parkingbrakes carefully at 15 mph (to fully engage the shoes) the noise don't stop.

So, I didn't find it out yet.

I'm waiting on a delivry of RS Barn stage 2 kit (heater, high flow cat, custom software) to do some more "serious" search and work. I'll keep you informed when any progress.

I had a similar problem as yours except that the noise didn't stop when the clutch was engaged. I took it in for service and the mechanic said it had something to do with the emergency brake (additionally, my emergency brake was incredibly hard to release). They fixed it and the emergency brake is fine now. So, you might check the emergency brake operation.

Let us know your impression of the RS Barn mods. I assume you're getting the cat back exhaust as well, right? Thanks.

Hi, today I finished to install the RS barn stage 2. I've done a test drive --> whaaaw. In pure accelaration a Porsche 997 carrera 4 couldn't hold on to me !!!

The engine takes up much smoother from 2500 rpm, and at +/- 4500 there is an extra push and the rpm needle rusches realy quick towards the red zone.

Nice job from Pete and well designed parts (heater + high flow cat).

progress on 24th oct 06 :

The problem of the strange noise from one wheel at the rear is solved. It was a central nut that holds the brake assembly (rotor) to the suspention which had lose a little and causes play on the wheel.

The nut is tightned again + secured with Loctide and the noise disappeared. The nut from the other driven wheel is now secured with Loctide as well, as preventable precaution.

Congrats on the RSBarn parts. Its good stuff.

A new axle nut, properly torqued shouldn't need loctite. It won't hurt but the nut may be a bitch to get off again. The wheel bearing may also have a shorter life if the nut had been loose for a while.
