Still squealing...
#1

So I removed the belt from the power steering pump and the squealing noise still exists. The balance shaft belt is VERY loose. Recommendations please.

TIA

Do not drive until you can check the tension of the balance belt with a P9201 tension tool. If the balance belt comes off it can become tangled in the timing belt and cause as much as $5000 in damage.

Thank you for the precaution. I can tell it is way to loose. The engine was running fine though this is puzzling to me. Since the noise started yesterday morning it hasn't ran more than 20 min. and I haven't driven it. Someone on rennlist suggested that it could be a balance shaft bearing and to check the oil for shavings so I guess that will be tomorrows job.

Where did you post on Rennlist? I suggest you cross post into the 968 specific forum. I have no idea what the squealing is but there are some guys there who may be able to help.

I should add "do not start the engine" to "do not drive".

Could the squeeling be from the other alternator / AC belt?

The balance shaft belt is very loose to the touch when properly tensioned. No where near the tension of an accessory belt or timing belt. It is very strange to an experienced wrench to feel a belt this loose.

I second this theory. However, in my case, the alternator/AC belt only squealed when I turned the AC on, especially when cold (i.e. first thing in the morning). I had to tighten it several times, beyond what I felt was a prudent amount, before the noise went away, but now it's been gone for about two months. Is your squealing associated with the AC being on?

I haven't been to motivated the past couple of days but I did remove the AC belt and that didn't help. I can see where the BS belt hass rubbed on another pulley so that's gotta be it. I'll have the urge to drive after the ALMS race Saturday so hopefully I'll put some time into it on Sunday.

Driving a Civic all week is not for me, although the 10 gallon fillup on cheap gas has my wallet happy!!!

Thank you guys for your suggestions.

If the balance belt has been damaged by rubbing on the pulley I suggest you replace it instead of retensioning.
