Stereo Upgrade
#1

Greetings,

I have option 331 (AM/FM Cassette w/2 door speakers) and the Blaupunkt CR-1 stereo currently installed in my car. I would like to upgrade the head unit to something more current such as the Blaupunkt Seattle MP74. It would be nice if it was plug and play with the current setup.

As far as I can see, I have two small speakers in front installed high-up on either side of the door and two speakers in the back. Is there another speaker in the arm rest on either side of the door in front?

I was curious to know what is installed with the factory 331 option. Do I have a subwoofer or amp installed with the factory setup? I would like to upgrade the speakers later down the line, so, I am just trying to get an idea of what I have. Any suggestions would be great! <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/wink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

This is the first time I have posted like this...Do a search. The engine is great.

This topic has more threads than you can read in an hour. OK ....Sorry,

Option 331 is AM/FM Cassette w/2 door speakers. You probably have 2 tweeters (upper door, round ~2.5"), speakers in the arm rest grill area, one each side. As for the rear speakers... do you have a fader knob on you head unit? Many of us have upgraded to a completely new system. There are many choices depending on how much you like to do your own work and how much money you have (want) to spend. Do a search.

Ok, I found it, mad max on .net listed the stereo options -

"ALL 968's came with speakers mounted under the armrests (5 1/4" woofer, 3" mid-range, and a tweeter mounted above the window switches). The rear speaker arrangement depends on whether or not it is a coupe of a cabriolet. Coupes had 6 3/4" woofer/tweeter (counts as 2 speakers as far as Porsche is concerned even though it is just a conventional 2-way speaker) and the Cabriolets had a 4x6" speaker on each side. Cabriolet 3 speakers in each door = 6 and 1 speaker on each side rear = 2. 6+2 = 8. In the Coupes you get a tweeters in the rear also so 10 speakers total. Now, some 968's also have an additional (optional) mid-range speaker mounted in the map pocket section of the door panel. It was put there because it fits the old 4x6 cutout from the original 944 stereo system."

well, he's wrong if he thinks that all 968s came with 3 in the door - my cab only came with 2 speakers in each door (one down below and a tweeter)- it was the standard configuration - this was the 6 speaker configuation - there is no external amplifier

also, the additional speaker that could fit in the map pocket is not a 4x6 - it is a small round one

flash,

thanks for that clarification. I am on a budget and trying to setup a road map in my mind. First and foremost I want a new head unit, something that is nice and will allow me to expand in the future. I will most certainly add an amp (maybe two) and a subwoofer to my configuration later. I am more concerned with clarity not volume. Right now, I am in the research phase and thought I would take it one step at a time.

2 words:

parametric equalizer

this is the single most important feature in achieving clarity in a car system - after that, everything is pretty easy

feel free to drop me a line - i'd be happy to help - there are some very good budget solutions out there

You have at least one amp already. Hi-Fi option cars have two. They are buried under the seats. I think Dave Greimann has the pdf of stereo schematics. A warning though - I am starting to think the the 968 stereos were cobbled together from whatever Porsche had lying around at the time of build. As Flash mentioned, some cars have two speakers under the armrest and others have three. Simultaneously, some cars have one speaker in the rear on each side and others have two. The schematics reflect these differences but attribute them to different years.

My car does not match any of the schematics exactly (according to my audio engineer buddy) and one of my amps has a 928 part number that is not reflected on any of the schematics. The good news is that the factory system seems fairly robust and even a bit over-engineered.

ok - let me try to clarify a bit more

there never was any external amp in my car - i've had the seats out of my car - no signs there was ever an amp there, yet it did come with the 6 speaker setup

all indications were that all speakers were powered off the deck alone

also, i only have 1 speaker under the arm rest - the tweeter is way up top

the mystery continues

all that being said, the factory speakers are not the problem in the system - they actually sound pretty good - there is better stuff out there, but these don't suck

the deck is the main downfall - you really need a parametric eq to tune these cars - then you need to think about a sub if you want big bottom end (especially in a cab)
