When you turn key, starter engages for a second but before it fires up it goes "whirrrrrrrrrr".
I'll be putting the new starter in tomorrow and I'll let you'all know if that fixed it. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/cool.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Funny. My car is dead a few miles away and I am working on determining battery or starter. Seems like battery now (no crank, volts way low). Got a new battery on the way. Figured I would put it in regardless as I have no idea how old the old one is. Decided not to worry about getting the fancy Optima. My daughter's boyfriend works at Advanced Auto (to pay for his Camaro racecar - he is an engineering student at C State) and had one in stock.
Checked around on starter prices:
All were remanufacturs and do not include core charge
Performance Products catalog - $400 (Bosch)
Local good Porsche shop - $325 (Bosch)
Local Advanced Auto - $ 305 and wait a week (unknown rebuild)
Sunset Porsche in OR - $95 (Porsche OEM rebuild)
Sunset is awesome! According to thier database there are only two Porsche OEM rebuilds in the US dealer parts network. It pays to shop around.

Hooray!
My problem was only a bad battery. All along I had chalked it up to GSS since this was a replacement battery for the original and the car is only at 70k. Third battery in 70k/13 years... hmmm I wonder if that is fairly normal. The replacement was a DieHard.
Hope your starter adventure is successful.

Took about 1 hour on the lift - not hard to do, didn't even have to remove any pans.
Getting the bushing out was a real booger though...
That old starter was really bad! It really cranks over FAST compared to before!
Wow, new starter, new front tires, what more could a Porsche nut ask for! :0

Well,my battery joy was short-lived. The battery was certainly shot - but it was the starter that killed it. It is already cranking hard. Ordered the OEM starter from Sunset for 96.00 plus shipping.
Wish I had a lift...

Always call Sunset Porsche in Beaverton OR before buying a part anywhere else. They discount 15% from thier price for out of state orders. I don't know why and I don't ask.
The other nice thing about them is that it is a dealership parts counter. They really know their stuff. Good guys to talk to. This was one of two OEM rebuilt 968 starters in PCNA stock and they happened to have it on their shelf. $40 core charge and $18 for three day shipping.
I still wish I had a lift...
