Spinoff from Cleaning Up Grounds
#1

This afternoon I went after a cleanup of GPIII and GPVI. Tried to be as prudent as possible so I disconnected the battery (+ term) before diving in. After taking on the easy ones (III and VI) I noticed that GPIV and GPV were pretty gettable, so I got them too. Also noticed a brown ground lead similar to and exactly opposite GPIII on the passenger side of the engine compartment that seems not to be documented so I got that too. In the process of doing GPV I did manage to drop my 10mm combo wrench into the bowels of the headlight box and finally managed to get it back.

All was looking pretty sweet until I fired her up to check things out. Start up was prompt and strong. Lights were brighter in every instance. Only problem was the hazard flashers came on without being asked to and insisted on keeping flashing no matter what combination of switches I tried. After shutting the car down the hazard flashers kept running for a while and then turned off as magically as they came to life.

While the engine was shut down I pulled flasher relay G4 to see if it was suffering from dirty contacts and replaced it. Restart produced the same results - hazard flashers running wild.

Tried starting it again with flasher relay G4 pulled - start normal, but hazard flashers still running wild.

At this point I've printed out all the '93 968 coupe wiring diagrams to see what is next to look at.

Any and all ideas to solve this little problem would be most welcome. I am ready to sit at the feet of you Masters of the 968 Universe.

Go re-visit the grounds that you cleaned and make sure there are no breaks in the wires or dodgy connections. Weird electrical problems like that are classic ground problems.

Yew becha! But make sure your shot card is up to date (if you know what I mean). A better bet is a new place down the street - The Brick. Good food. Good beer. Good folks.

One more thought on grounds.

Like Einstein said, "It's all relative." I discovered that my problem described above that appeared after cleaning up GPIII, GPIV, GPV and GPVI went away after I cleaned up GPI. Seems that what was fine (GPI) when the others were shaky can become shaky (relatively) after the others are improved.

If you take on a grounds fix project, be prepared to do more than one or two to avoid wierd electrical problems.
