Speeding inhibited in Ca
#1

All aboard the California crazy train !   The nanny state of Kaliforniastan came up with another doozy:

Senate Bill 961 would require cars to start beeping when they exceed the speed limit by ten miles per hour, along with requiring “passive speed limiters” to be installed in all new cars manufactured or sold in the State by 2032.  The motion, introduced by Senator Scott Wiener would make California the first state in the nation to enact the requirement.

They will probably require something to be microstamped as well. Maybe the tire tread so the cops can trail the car....They can install big magnifying glasses on the front...lol

I have a feature in my Maserati ( 2013 ) which beeps for a fraction of a second when I exceed a certain speed limit , but that speed limit is adjustable to any level the driver wants it to be.   As I understand it , the Ca bill would make the beeping to be repetitive until you drop below the limit, it’s not adjustable by the car owner / driver, and cannot be disabled ( removing a fuse, cutting a wire, etc ) .

But the speed limiter feature is about as idiotic as it gets .. even for a nanny state.

Yep, +1 on that.  I object to features that consider they are better drivers than I am, with better anticipation, and hence intervene when I don't want them to.  The only modern feature I enjoy is cruise control for highway driving as it is relaxing.  If I ever need someone to tell me to brake or stay in lane then it's time to hand in my license.  Case in point just a few days ago, I avoided an accident when someone jumped lanes in front of me, thus halving my braking distance in an already evolving accident scenario.  An automated car would have emergency braked, but as said the distance would have been too short.  So I steered out of danger and saw the accident take place in my rear-view mirror ...... having said that I am now bound to have a pile up next week so promise to tell you about it!

Cudos for a quick reaction time.

On a slightly different but similar note, HOD(Hooked On Driving) which offers HPDE events at tracks started a preferred windows up and blinker system for passing policy.  A study done by the new owners showed drivers not coming to events if it was going to rain and they had to drive with their windows down. Change is everywhere.

It's user adjustable. The user can sell the car. I have to paint my 2007 Element because my wife won't drive anything else. She hates the electronic garbage in all the cars now especially after watching me hate my 2016 silverado that nothing ever worked properly. Her car only has 145 K on it and mechanically it's basically new. They don't print enough money in a year to make me even want to ever visit CA let alone ever live there. No thank you.

As far as I care it could fall into the ocean. I just can't understand how anyone lives or would want to live there, but I am sure there are folks who feel the same about FL...At least we are allowed to own firearms...be safe out there....

Well, we don't hear stories about "California Man"!

I assume this "feature" will only be on new cars, which is OK, since I don't plan to buy one anytime soon.  But despite that, I still maintain that California is the greatest place on earth.  I grew up there, and after 11 years in Phoenix, and 32(!) years in Austin, TX, I can't wait to get back, where the weather is beautiful year-round, and there is an unlimited number of things to do.  We've already bought a house, and I move in August when I retire.  I plan to get seriously into racing my Radical SR3 (pictured) on the many tracks within a few hours drive of where we've going to live.

Yes, only new cars .   And since I don’t plan to ever buy a new car , I don’t really care for myself but it’s the principle that’s a bit annoying ..   and I’m not getting into a Ca vs. other states comparison debate, since it’s all subjective..  suffice it to say,  I’m never moving anywhere else , for any reason ..  doesn’t stop me from complaining about one thing or another , but none of those are compelling things to consider living anywhere else .. and I’ve traveled the world, and most states here .

Hey it's just a move to reduce unemployment.  Think of all the new "speeding buzzer removal" jobs that will be created!  And if it can't be removed?  That's what car stereos are for!

California, the original "Nanny State"

In case you missed it they started the "Florida Man" Games. I am personally not interested but in case anyone else is, you could tune in.

I am too busy wondering if our former president goes to prison, does the secret service go with him? Lol.

And if you think CA has a monopoly on stupid laws, Las Vegas just passed a law that prohibits people from stopping on bridges and pedestrian areas to sight see or take photos and they can go to jail or get fined for impeding or disrupting the pedestrian flow. Seriously? The gawking capital of the world won't let you stop and gawk anymore. What is this world coming to.

I am glad I like my house.

Yes, if Trump goes to jail, the Secret Service goes along.  He is lucky that the difficult logistics  posed by such a possibility will likely result in him receiving a sentence of probation that will include some time on home detention.   Not many people avoid incarceration after being convicted of multiple felonies.  The interesting question will be whether his travel will be restricted while on probation and/or bail pending appeal.  Also what effect his anticipated refusal to accept responsibility and exhibit remorse will have on his sentence.

And Florida doesn't suck ... after, it does includes the Keys which are wonderful!

It strikes me as crazy to drive that fast in a convertible with the top down.  Maybe Porsche has done aerodynamic testing to prove the car is stable at that speed;  otherwise I'm sure they would have added a limiter to prevent it from going above the speed where it's no longer stable.

Interesting event and glad they were not killed. You can do all the testing in the world on the vehicles, but you can't certify the drivers...

The older I get, the more things I think about that can go wrong and the slower I go. I guess that's why Galapagos tortoise move like they do...

Same here !  At 68, the “need for speed” no longer has much appeal to me.   Also why Galapagos tortoises live as long as they do.. B)
