Shoulder Belt "Half Twist"
#1

After getting my car back from having the top replaced, I noticed that the shoulder belts had a half-twist between the buckle and the upper guide, before the belt enters the body to the retractor. I couldn't figure out any way that the top work could have caused this, so I concluded that the twists have always been there, but never bothered me - until now. So, I just finished removing the rear interior panel and forcing the twist to be between the guide and the retractor. In fact, I put the "twist" at the retractor with the belt fully extended so that it will (should?) remain there as long as the belt is never fully extended, thereby not interfering with the movement of the belt through the guide.

I only did this on the driver's side. If it works, I'll do the passenger side. It's a little challenging to get that interior panel out with the Flash Chassis Stiffener installed, but it's doable.

Have others noticed this "half twist"? Are you similarly bothered by it, or do you live with it (as I apparently was doing for the past four years)? Or do you not have this twist?

Jim, this has mysteriously happened in several cars I have owned including 968s. You can generally fold the belt diagonally and work it back through the buckle to the proper configuration without any disassembly.

I'm familiar with the twist issue you describe, and have solved those in the manner you describe. In this case, though, getting the half-twist to the other side of the buckle simply would have resulted in two half-twists - one between the buckle and the fixed mounting point on the side of the seat, and one between the buckle and the guide at the shoulder. I could have just forced the twist through the guide without disassembly, but testing showed that it would bind in the guide. That's why I disassembled - so that I could get the twist to the base of the belt at the tensioner, where hopefully it will stay.

How's the new top, Jim?

The top looks great, it's a pleasure to have a clear rear window, and it seems to seal a little better against rain. So, overall, it's a winner. Thanks for asking.

Glad to hear you're happy with it! Isn't it amazing to actually be able to SEE out the back window? So did you finally pass the NJ inspection? When's the paint job coming? Baltic black is a great choice....Huskydog had his painted in that color and it looks sharp. Might ask him about his painting experience to avoid any pitfalls and increase chances of success...

I've got that twist on the driver's side only. Always been there since I got the car from original owner. Always bugged me.

So far, the fix I did for the half-twist on the driver's side is holding. After a little more time, if it still is OK, I'll do the passenger side.
