SELLING ( TRACK ) TIRES ?
#1

I'm buying Michelin PS2 to get a much quieter ride than my current Yokohama tires, which to me are too loud. However, sound is clearly a subjective matter so to someone who either does not care about noise all that much, or if you track the car and are looking for a set of tires which have a heck of a lot of tread left, I would accept most reasonable offers... problem is, I have no idea what would be considered "reasonable", and thus I appreciate any opinions posted on the topic...

( a couple of pix of the front tires attached )

In my best guess, the front have about 3/4 of the thread left, and the rears about 2/3 of the thread left. Not really used all that much. They sat in a garage for a number of years, after the P.O. replaced his wheels with 18", when these tires were practically new, and I drove about 5k miles on them since..

These are Yokohama AVS S1 Z ( not available in the U.S. - the original owner was a Yokohama executive and had these sent from Japan ). I'm told they are the very top of the performance line tire Yokohama makes.

Sizes are 225 45 17 front and 255 40 17 rear ( stock for 7.5 / 65 and 9 / 55 wheels )

If anyone is interested, feel free to email me: sandru@comcast.net

Look on the tire sidewall for the build date. If they sat too long in the garage they may no longer be safe to use on the street or the track. After five years tires go bad, even if they have not had all of the tread worn off. Good luck, Bob Blackwell.

Bob, now you tell me !! <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/wink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/blink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> After regularly taking them over 120 and a few times over 150..

Good point though - I'll check the date.

the only set of numbers that look like it could be a date is: 0210593 - 21st of May 1993 ? ( though not sure why the 0 in front of 21 ..)

Nothing else I can see on the sidewalls, inside or out, that may refer to a build date. So, if that's the case ( mfg in '93 ) I guess the tires are too old in spite of how they look and feel, and I'll retract the post.

The '93' may also refer to the load capacity of the tire.

Many tires have load ratings on them, as well, that carry a number like that. Check with folk like Tire Rack to see what the corresponding 'Load Rating' number means.

Don't throw those tires out just yet!

Can't really find the build date but it's definitely more than five years ago and after listening to sound advice and consensus that rubber, in spite of it's great appearance does lose its resiliency and safety factor, I can't possibly consider selling these to anyone.

And to think I took them to 160mph once, and countless times around 120mph, although never sustained those speed for more than a minute at a time.. not sure that makes any difference.. all I can say is a retroactive : YYIIKES ! <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/blink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/unsure.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />
