RIP Carroll Shelby
#1

Alongside F.Porsche and E. Ferrari, another giant of the automotive world passed away today. His legend will never die, though...

That sucks....the only American car company I have respect for is Ford, and its mostly because of Shelby, and his Ferrari killers. That and theyre not a socialist, welfare funded company. RIP Mr. Shelby, catch ya on the other side! Your engineering genius will be missed.

It is interesting that there are no longer people like this that we refer to a pioneers in the automotive area. It is a great loss and another character gone. His work and legacy from the great cars will always be with us. If imitation is the most sincere form of flattery - having one of your cars as the most copied in the world must be a testament to his greatness. The 427 AC Cobra was recently voted the #1 muscle car in a survey over here.

A few of us were at coffee & cars in SoCal a few years ago and saw Carroll Shelby there driving one of his 427s.. Awesome moment.

Even though I'm not a muscle car person (and I wouldn't really classify the AC Cobra as a muscle car, personally), the AC Cobra is one of my all-time favorite cars. Not to be crass, but with Shelby's passing, their already stratospheric values will probably shoot up even more.

I read Carroll Shelby's bio, and he was an amazingly versatile guy. One of the longest surviving heart transplant recipients ever, too. He will be missed.

Sad news. I always considered Shelby as one of the great innovators from what many consider the golden era of sports car development, along with the likes of Colin Chapman and Jim Hall. I guess Hall is the last left of this imaginative breed.

Interesting comment Booster because I would agree and don't think the cobra was a muscle car, but recently one of our main local car mags rated the top 25 muscle cars of all times, normally I don't read our local mags only Evo/Car etc from the UK, but bought this just to read the article. Even accounting for our local muscle cars, as well as the US regulars, they voted the Cobra as the ultimate muscle car.

Either way a big loss, and I agree to other comments it will be rare in the future for "individual names" like Ferdinand, and Shelby to be remembered, as most cars have teams of designers/engineers. Although I would think a few from the current world will be remembered all be it for more bespoke cars, such as Pagani, Gordon Murray etc.....

I still remember the first Cobras that I saw race. It was the USRRC races at Laguna Seca in 1963. Shelby entered 4 works USRRC Cobras that captured the 1 first four places in the GT class. They absolutely dominated the GT class in the USRRC races and were dominant inthe SCCA production race series as well. It certainly was the Golden Age of road racing in the US and I do miss it. Cobras were and still are one of my all time favorite cars.
