Replacing the Steering Column Sleeve
#1

Between the steering wheel and the dashboard is a rubber sleeve, part number 944.552.373.020.01C, PET calls it a "Steering Column Sleeve (black)", Illustration nr., 903-02, Item 3.

What is the trick to removing it/reinstalling it? You cannot thread the Turn signal stalk, cruise control stalk, and wiper stalk thru it without ripping the sleeve. How do you remove the turn signal stalk?

I have the steering wheel off, and the pieces behind it up to the rubber sleeve.

Appreciate any help.

Thanks.

I'm told that the "trick" is to soak the rubber piece in hot water to get it as flexible as possible - then to "carefully" stretch it over the stalks. When I replaced my dashboard, I wanted to replace that rubber sleeve. I did as I just described - and I now have a new sleeve with one split that's held together very well with Super Glue. In other words, it didn't work.

If I had to do it again, I'd selectively make a cut, and then glue it together.

I have had no problems putting on the boot and then putting on the stalks after it. If you try stretching it over it will definitely rip.

I can't remember... I haven't done it in a long time. I don't remember it being tricky...

Instructions for removing the turn signal / wiper switch assembly are here:

See steps 13-16 on page 10.

I haven't done this myself, so I can't offer any specific advice. Good luck.

I've done the boot twice. The first time I tore the slender rubber section just above the turn signal. The second time, 15 minutes ago, I successfully installed a new boot. After cutting the hole for the cruise control stalk, cleaning off the mold release and heating it to about 120F I slipped the boot over the cruise and wiper stalk and pulled on the upper and lower sections of the boot until they stretched enough to slide the boot over the turn signal stalk. I did my pulling with the door open and my feet firmly planted on the garage floor. The key to this was that I did not stretch the thinnest section at all. YMMV.

BTW, I did look for a way to remove and reinstall the turn signal stalk but when nothing appeared obvious, I went with brute strength <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/tongue.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />
