My Guards Red original Porsche paint is going, going, almost gone. My passenger door looks like it has been hit with baby powder unless I wax it every week. 20 years on the paint. And I have to content with a paint bubble the size of a lemon right in the middle of the driver side door. I can't take it anymore!



Does anyone recommend one of the typical chain shops that do body and paint work? I got a quote from an excellent local independant body shop for $3,000 to repaint the entire car, keeping the Guards Red original color of course. I don't know if this is reasonable or not. The same shope quoted me $950 to take care of the rust spot, paint the door, and blend in from front and back fenders. A good buddy here says that's a great price, so I am thinking of taking that, but I feel nuts just doing half when I know the whole car needs a spray. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated!

You may be able to bring back the paint with a good professional paint correction type detail and then take the less expensive route by fixing the rust spot and blending the panels. Solid colors are usually easier to blend than metallics so long as the painter is good at that! If your paint is original, it should be base coat only...no clear. Of course, this option is a band aid fix but would probably be OK if you're on a budget. 3K for a whole respray is a super price but I'd be careful that you don't get what you pay for. I just recently mildly participated in a full respray of a Ferrari 328 and it was 4K with us doing the dis-assembly and re-assembly but none of the prep. Prep being the operative word there as for 3K, I bet you get a quickie prep job. If the car is decent, you may be OK, but just spraying the whole car for the sake of doing the whole car without proper prep will yield poor results. Just some random thoughts...

I was quoted $8500 for a full repaint by a guy that did great work. Included dis-assembly and prep. He cautioned that he really did not like to repaint "these cars" because the plastic bits tend to break during the prep. $3-4K seems right if you have to disassemble and prep.

This is indeed the dilemma with older cars. Once the paint goes getting it resprayed corectly cost 1/2 the price of another car. I see so many people who have a cheap repaint done just so the car will be "shiny" again. Problem is, in the eyes of a professional, having it resprayed poorly devalues the car as much if not more than having the faded paint. It's a tough call, but the $5000 and up figures mentioned above are correct for professional work in a quality shop. If one of those pro painter employees has a paint booth in his back yard then perhaps...........



But remember getting a "side" job preformed is a handshake deal with only as much warranty as the guy is willing to extend and in a lot of states very little to no legal options if things go bad. I have a friend (also a forum member) with first hand experience in this.



Obviously I'm referring more to custom work, but it's not difficult to spend $5,000 + painting a motorcycle.
