Euro Turn Signal retrofit
#1

Euro european corner corners

Gang -

Here is an extensive DIY of a pretty simple project. I'm fine tuning my DIY format, and y'all are the guinea pigs. Thanks.

European Turn Signal retrofit. This gets rid of the ugly and useless front bumperettes fitted to US model 968s. Part numbers for these are:

944.631.051.00

944.631.052.00

I got them from Sunset Imports for $94.61 shipped to California.

INSTRUCTIONS:

Picture 1 – US spec turn signal with bumperette

Picture 2 - Remove cap on bumperette with flatblade screwdriver.

Picture 3 – Nuts and bolts holding bumperette on. These bolts also help hold the bumper cover to the chassis.

Picture 4 – Remove the screw at the rear of the turn signal

Picture 5 – Picture of new Euro turn signal. Note the 2 slide hooks on the inside body, these will slide into the appropriate bumper holes. Twist and remove the white bulb socket, it will not be used.

Picture 6 – Once the screw is removed, jiggle the signal body and slide it forward. NOTE: on some cars, it is easier to remove the bumperette first. On mine, it was one way on one side and one way on the other. You might as well just remove the bumperettes first.

Picture 7 – Turn signal bulb and socket. No, that is not the color the bulb should be, it had a spectacular blowout in one of its two filaments.

Picture 8 – Socket with a new replacement bulb.

Picture 9 – Bumperette is removed with 8mm socket. A standard socket is barely deep enough, better to use a deep wall socket.

Picture 10 – Picture of the corner with bumperette and turn signal removed.

Picture 11 – To replace high beam/driving light bulbs at the same time, remove the bolt holding the light housing in place. 8mm also. NOTE: the two plastic screws to the left of the retaining screw are the driving light aiming adjusters. One moves the light housing side to side, the other up and down.

Picture 12 – Rotate the housing forward.

Picture 13 – And out.

Picture 14 – A new Silverstar H1 ST for the driving light bulb replacement.

Picture 15 – Unto the socket clip by spreading open the two tabs.

Picture 16 – Careful doing so, as you can easily damage the socket lip……like I did.

Picture 17 – Light housing is opened by removing this screw.

Picture 18 – Then rotate the back half of the housing over these tabs.

Picture 19 – Inside of the housing.

Picture 20 – Slide back red rubber boot and undo clips to driving light bulb

Picture 21 – Remove bulb with power wire INTACT. Then slide bulb off of connector. Much easier than trying to remove the connector with the bulb still in place.

Put new Silverstar bulb into housing, then secure it in place with the wire clips. THEN slide the electrical connector on and slide the red boot back into place.

Next, reverse steps 11 thru 18: Close the housing back up, tighten down the housing screw, and fit the light assembly back into place in the bumper. Tighten down retaining screw just past hand tight. Do not overtorque.

Picture 22 - 23 – Twist the turn signal bulb socket into the new Euro housing, then slide the euro housing into the bumper for a test fit. The first picture shows the hooks and the holes they go into.

Picture 24 – Once the test fit is established, take the turn signal retaining screw and pre-tap it into the housing several turns. There are some small plastic tabs in the screw hole that make this step necessary. Make sure it goes in straight.

Picture 25 – Once the screw has been tapped, then fit the housing into place and screw in the retaining screw.

Pictures 26-27-28 – Check the running light, turn signal, and high beam operation.

Pictures 29-30 - Its amazing how much this seemingly simple mod cleans up the front end.

If the local police do not care about such things, removal of the front plates really finish off the front end product. Next go and get those huge rear bumperettes and get them painted body color at BUMPER PLUGS. You'll be glad that you did.

Just finished this update/mod...it really looks good (especially with a splitter).

I did both the front and rear and I think for the dollars spent this is the best mod you can do.

I've heard the 993 turbo clear lenses fit, is this true?

The lenses fit but not exactly. they are not the same shape. One with rounded corner; other squared off corner. From 5-10 feet you could not tell, but up close it is obvious that they are not made for the 968. Search the MODIFICATIONS group on this siute and you will see the thread about a company in Europe that has been talking about producing a clear front lens for the 968...we are still waiting.

I am (yet again) trying to get around do doing a few little things on my car - and this is one of them. I compiled all the info from Mirror into one pdf so I could print out a handy copy while doing this - thought I would put it up in case the one DIY pdf might help anyone else...

chris

okay - for some reason was not able to upload the file - so I put it here:

Thanks - Did you get my PM on your pdf's? Sorry I blew you off, hadn't been online for some time - I can't believe I've had my car for two years now and have done NOTHING (almost) on it - something always pulls me away!

But this time (with firm conviction and a positive assessment of impending tax liability) I'm going to try to do some stuff. Remember my exhaust posts? Yep - still not done...RS Barn should be getting an order soon. Plus strut braces, new plug wires, chip, etc...also FINALLY ordered the trim rings from Crutchfield and a new K&N Filter for the airbox mod...a few little dings to take out, paint, and thinking about the front end splitter and new rocker panels...and for me (aesthetically) is redoing the interior with a black / aluminum trim style...new carpet, etc. Along the way moving some of the switches to their "proper" locations (that I recall Flash taking about at some time) and also maybe doing that spiffy nav system I see you did. Very cool...

Oh...and wheels. I'll be done in a few years. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

I am wondering about the clear lenses for the trun signals - have not run across any update that you can find them for our cars yet...but am thinking I might try the almost fit ones. Only place I have run across them is here:

Chris,

Sounds like you are well on your way. Lots of work ahead!

Must have spaced on your PM...sorry.

The NAV system and the steering wheel are THEE 2 best interior changes that I have made. If you are downtown, and can stop by I'll show you.

I have just made a clear lens for the 3rd brake light to go with the LED mod. I was thinking about doing a clear front turn signal, but the size of the mold and cutting off the lamp housing to graft it on did not appeal to me. I am glad that you found v-zweeden. I want to get a set but they have to send me a quote on air shipment first. The lenses should finish off my "clear goes better with silver bodies" idea.

Shouldn't be too hard to remove the lens from the housing without cutting. You'd just pull off the lens, make a new clear one, and put it back in place of the amber piece.

And THANK YOU for taking the time to take all the pictures and post the write up in the first place! Even though this is a "simple" mod...(though I find I can make anything complicated)...it's info like that's one reason this site is so great!
