Remote garage door opener
#1

My garage door remote is clipped onto my sun visor.

What I would like to do is somehow be able to use one of the switches in my center console, thereby elimiating the unsightly remote on the visor.

Has anyone done this ? And if so I'd greatly appreciate any advise and instructions you may provide.

You'll have to "sacrifice" your OEM door opener by opening it up and connecting a pair of wires to the actual push button switch, but I would assume that you can do so so that it makes a simple contact closure to take the place of the door opener. Then put a switch in the center console, such as a window switch or sunroof switch with the appropiriate pins connected and viola - a "remote" switch for your OEM door opener. Stash the door opener in the glove box or mount it under the dash somewhere (assumming it's RF energy can still transmit enough to make the door open) and run the wire to it. There may be other ideas out there but this was what popped into my head first! You should have 2 maybe 3 spare switch locations in the center console.

There is a extensive thread on this on .net - do a search or maybe someone can post a link - One of the links was connecting to your flash to pass function with a sears 12v (no batteries needed) opener placed in the front of the car - very cool. You flash your lights at the garage door and it opens/closes...

You can buy the acutal HomeLink parts from Audi, or find a wrecked newer Audi. The whole homelink system is in the visor. Buy the new visor, dismantle it and yours, and reinstall. We have been doing this on older BMW's for a while. Just another idea for a more OEM look. And you get three openers instead of just one.

Same setup on the late model Infiniti. My wife's 2003 I-35 has the buttons on the visor and you can program it to be compatible with just about any garage door opener. Good luck, Bob Blackwell.

I did this on my Harley... I have a Genie garage door opener. The big remote that uses the special battery won't work because 12v will fry it. I found the smaller key-fob opener at Home Depot for $30. Open the unit up and solder a wire across the contacts for the button to make it permanent. Then solder wires to the battery terminals, grounding one and powering the other. I have the power side on my high-beam. To open the door, I flash my brights and voila! It goes up or down... I have run this setup for 2 years and I drive alot with the brights on and have had no problems. I have been thinking of doing the same on the 968. I just need to find the "flash to pass" circuit. Anyone identified it yet? I know it's different whether the lights are on or not...

Here's the link to the boxsters flash to pass open set up - don't know if it helps with the 968's flash wiring?

Tony, so 12 volts won't damage the emitter?

If I'm reading the wiring diagram correctly, tapping fuse 27 (15 a - additional driving lights) should make this work for +12 when the "flash to pass" is activated (this is pretty much the same way suggested for the boxster. The only catch to this is I don't think it will work if the headlights are on.

My car is currently having the tranny fixed, or I'd go and try it.

I did this years ago, probably in 1994. I call it my James Bond button. I mounted a red momentary push button in the blank space in the dash next to the window wiper speed switch. The wires run to the utility box in the the cover in front of the air filter (where the gloves are kept). I put both my garage door opener and gate opener in there is wired them together. I kept the batteries in the units as both used 9v. When I push the button, it activates both transmitters.

Now all I need is seat ejector button!
