Cruise/Speed control retrofit
#21

I know a man with an Adventurine Green car that has cruise he says it works just fine,

Only really uses it to keep to the speed limit in the 35 miles of road works on the M1 motorway

And before you ask the road works have been on one bit or another for over 10 years

Cruise will work fine, but when it fails it is usually due to a brain problem - sometimes solder joints crack, I just had mine repaired by 928srus.com.  Keeping my fingers crossed that it works out for you.  I would check the brain wiring, but it's just too cold here right now to go upside down in the garage (-10F tonight).

I have a full set of new capacitors for mine, they are the normal cause of brain issues

CC works  Big Grin  Big Grin  Big Grin  Big Grin  Big Grin  tested all functions from approx 20Mph/35Kph up to 60Mph/100Kph .... I'll get to motorway testing on the weekend.

Still need to tidy up a few things, and of course because I was at eyeball distance from the engine and foot-wells more than a few times I discovered more little jobs to do.

Waylander I know you are interested in the practicalities, so later I'll put down any of the hiccups I ran in to.  Cheers

thank you it will be an interesting read,

If you want to PDF it into a how to, it can be hosted on here and if you wish the PDlibrary online

No worries, I still have a week before my wife returns!! ..... (though at some stage I shall need to do the dishes Sad)

I wouldn't like to be definitive about such things as there are plenty of people of have been there before me.  However, the "news" on www is almost exclusively 944 oriented and can be quite random, so this forum needs to know about any differences. Maybe we can work together on the "How to"....

Cheers, Robert

Thank you DSM.  Technically it is very simple, but physically it is difficult.  I spent a lot of time upside-down repetitively trying to do things with the fingers of one hand when they would be done in seconds if only both hands could be in there at the same time ... but hey, that's part of the challenge.

On another note I have flown in and out of Des Moines on many occasions as my step-daughter went to Iowa State in the 90s.  I was there in the floods of, I think, 1996.  Also I'm presently trying to chase down a limited edition Maytag print I bought in Storey City, which is probably in a warehouse somewhere in the world Sad

Have a good weekend!

Waylander, you indicated "there are 3 different looms for the engine bay, but they do not state if cruise is included or not" ..... how many different looms are in the foot-well? If it is just two then I suspect one is CC signals only and the other is the complete loom. If there are more then there may be a "no CC connections" version.

Slave cylinders are now £288.66 or $300 that is just robbery, the repair kit is £23 / $23

Hi Waylander, when you get time to post our notes on pdlibrary, can you please dump the link on here so as to tie off this thread. Thanks

Hi Rob

so here are the PET pages for the cruise...

As all the stuff i had was from the USA = LHD, I have had to buy some more parts for the UK RHD

Number 13, the little arm with roller, the cable pin is on the other side on the RHD version, that part was £68

Number 17, as the parts I had were from a 944 £2.18

Number 12, the RHD cable is only about 10-12 Inches long £10.38

Number 14, Clutch Micro Switch

Number 24, Plastice cable holder, can you believe £8.00

Number 14 is a Hartmann Lever Micro switch, no clip or fixing shown, I have checked the Pedal Images and no luck there,

Rob did you say the switch was default open or closed?

Hi Martin, a few things ...

The signal going into the CC brain is 0v when clutch pedal is released/ foot off ...... in my case that means the plunger is fully pushed in because the switch is mounted on the driver's side of the pedal block with the plunder facing towards the pedal.

So when detached from the pedal block the plunger is out, so my switch is normally OPEN.

However the important thing is the signal to the CC brain. If that micro-switch is mounted elsewhere then normally closed might be fine.  So actually whether your switch is NC or NO will indicate where it is to be mounted in relation to the pedal and give some guidance on where to look for the mounting.

I looked again at arrow 16 on the 944online diagram I sent.  The function on that item is not obvious if it is not for the micro-switch.  I suspect they haven't itemised it as this is a US company and so they just don't stock the RHD switch.  Anyway I have left them a message and we'll see if they respond.

Did you manage to get all the components?  I have a spare part of the Brain input loom (8 pin) because I took the plug/socket off my 944, but the loom side (socket) was already on my 968.  If you want it I'm happy to send it over.  Cheers

Hi Rob

I had all the plugs and sockets, the 7 pin for the engine bay both ends, the 8 pin for the inside, I removed the pins from the plugs and re-soldered new cables directly into the plugs, I had the 4 pin for the column switch both halves and the brake and clutch connectors, all on about 8 inches of rock hard wires,

they were all redone with new cables too,

so I have both looms in place and the ECU, they are now all plugged in, the column switch is wired, so is the brake and B15 in the cluster plug,

I have ordered all the parts that I need to finish it, from Porsche Dealership Parts

I did have to modify the column switch cover which i am not too happy with, so I need to order the Trim Piece 944 552 073 01 1DB, this is for option 454 and its £27.77 inc tax.

As Porsche Germany is shut down and no parts are getting shipped I have no idea when it will get finished

going back to the switch on the pedal, I believe its a ground thing as the H32 is a ground point in the diagrams, and the brake is a voltage drop I think, which would explain the cruise not working when you have bulbs out or LED fitted

Rebonjour Martin, as we would say here if we were able to meet anybody on the street more than once in a single day ....

Well done for getting the speedo signal from B15.  That was the signal I was worried about, and so was very happy to see the signal loom already installed in my 968.

As for "going back to the switch on the pedal, I believe its a ground thing as the H32 is a ground point in the diagrams" ... I entirely agree, H32 joins to GP1 so the clutch switch links the CC7 brain to GP1 when foot-off.  When foot-on, the switch is open circuit so there must be a pull up resistor on the brain circuit board.

"and the brake is a voltage drop I think, which would explain the cruise not working when you have bulbs out or LED fitted" .... I'm not convinced about this, but of course I could be wrong.  My logic includes the existence of the 3rd brake light; not obligatory, so if the brake lights made a difference the CC brain would need to be matched to whether the car had a 3rd brake light or not.  But more importantly, the brake pedal switch puts 12v onto CC2, the only thing stopping that would be either a short circuit on the brake lights, or fuse 19 blown.  They could have set up a current drain sensor at CC2, but that would be unreliable over time.

Anyway, you will find out for yourself as part of your system tests as soon as you get your CC going; and I wish you well with that.  Cheers

PS I've just looked at item 16 again on the 944online diagram, I think it is a little support clip for the steel clutch fluid pipe.  Anyway, I left them a message so we'll see if they come back with anything helpful.

I thought I had finished off this CC retrofit thread with the installation report, but it appears I forgot to do so.  So here it is for future reference:
