Making my 968 quiet
#41

Right ;-) . Back to noise - it actually makes the exhaust tune better because so many of the other ride related noises ( at least for those of us with coupes ) are significantly reduced or muffled out entirely.

Thank you MB for a very interesting explanation of the viscoelastic properties of the guey stuff on the dynamat. I learned a ton in your 3 or so posts.

And of course thank you ds for your singular sense of humor. Being very careful to protect my delicate sense of hearing I have also spent many hours in the ear saving local, so unfortunately I learned little from that post, yet enjoyed it immensely. Back to sound.

Both of my cars made/make a sound that I am going to post as a poll to gain a bit more readership that this stale dynamat discussion.

Seriously MB - great stuff keep it coming.

Glad its of some interest. Since I've been retired for a while I don't get to talk technical much. This disc'n brought back some old memories as in the late 70s and early 80s I helped redevelop a line of viscoelastic mat'ls we used mostly for reducing mechanical instabilities on our equipment. They originally contained a plasticizer that was later banned, PCBs. Virtually all the early techie part of my carear was focused around the field of dynamics, chatter, vibration and noise control.

Having just completed the processes of replacing the carpet in my 93 Cab and adding Dynamat to the floor, doors and firewall, I think I can offer a new and objective view of the benefits pro or con of this upgrade. I can't speak to the science but whatever the technical aspects are it works, and works very well. Whatever sound was eliminated or tuned down resulted in the car having a quiter more solid feel.

I did not do the trunk and am not sure I will because I am happy the way the car is now. I will say that if you do nothing else, do the doors. I find myself opening and closing them just to hear that solid thump when it closes.

Cost was nominal, i used 36 square feet of Dynamat Extreme at a cost of $148. The material added 21Lbs to the car but I must have taken out half that in glue.

One point that I did not expect was the sound of the exhaust seems softer in the car. I have the stock system and at some point will upgrade to a cat back system. My last Cab had the BB system on it and i loved the sound. What happens now it that the sound disappears into the general road noise unless getting on it. I've lost just a little to much of the sound I like, so it looks like a new cat back system is in the near future.

I have been uncharacteristically lazy in replacing my stereo because I love the sound of my catback. My employees love it too because they can hear me coming from a good distance!
