#1

has any  one used this product called COLORLOCK Leather fresh? My bolster on drivers side has some wear and I was thinking of trying this in magenta. The reviews are very favorable, thank  you for any help

just make sure it is water-based, and not oil-based.  oil based products do not breathe, and end up making the leather stiff, and ultimately crack

I used leather dye from leather world. You have to also purchase thinner and another productt from then that reduces the sheen. Sample a small area in an inconspicuous spot.

yeah - if it needs a thinner, that stuff is oil based.  looks good at the beginning, but not permeable.  the problem with that is that any leather conditioner is useless, as it cannot get into the leather, and just sits on top.

i just learned this stuff in reworking the seats on a couple of cars.  it was something i had been concerned about, because every seat i had seen that had been re-dyed was hard and slick, and would not soften up with leather treatment.  as it turns out, they were all oil based.  it was the standard for a very long time, and is still common practice.  day and night difference between water base and oil base though.  the seats i just had done with water-base took the leather treatment and softened up immediately.  very cool.

Flash - can you remember the water-based product's trade-name?

i didn't buy the product.  i hired a guy to do the job.  refinishing seats is a bit of an art.  it takes skill to sand the leather just the right amount.  some application is by sponge, and some by airbrush.  it depends on the area.  prep is everything too.  it isn't expensive, and it only takes a couple of hours per seat.  i've seen it done well, and i've seen it done poorly.  no chance i'd mess with it myself.  it would piss me off too much if i messed up.

I've seen good results on other forums from ColorPlus.com products. It comes in standard Porsche colors and can be ordered in special colors. A sample ( a piece taken from under the seat) of the special color needs to be sent in order for them to match. As soon as it warms up I plan on dying a set of grey Boxster seats black for my old 944.

Cheers,

just to repeat, as long as it's a water-based product, it should hold up pretty well over time.  oil-based products look fine right after application, but are generally stiff, and then cracks start to form over time, due to the impermeable nature of the product.  it doesn't allow the leather to absorb any treatment products.

i don't know what each product out there is, but i highly recommend ascertaining its base composition, prior to purchase.

i would never change the color of a seat with something like this.  applying a dye like this is fine for "reconditioning" a seat, but changing color is not recommended.  better to just have them reupholstered in the color you want.

I have had very good luck with SEM Sure-Coat elastomeric coating.

Check the web to see if they have youe exact color. I was lucky, my color is black.
