Ray Starbird
#1

For those who remember Ray Starbird from the past, I have some good news.

I had been very concerned about Ray, since I had not heard from him since 2004. After doing some recent Google searching, I found the following info about Ray:

- left Cox and formed his own business

- was involved in the 2008 political campaign in Georgia (supported my candidate)

- got married to a beautiful lady (wedding photos awesome)

- prefers no communication (does not respond to written or verbal requests)

I am happy that Ray is alive and well but it is unfortunate that he does not want to communicate with former 968.net group (site is still up but dormant). I am sure he has his reasons and I will respect them.

Great news, I wish him well!

Mea culpa,

My final sentence should have read "it appears that Ray does not want to communicate with former 968.net members."

Yep, he has moved on, best of luck to him and his new Bride.

Thanks for the update. I wonder if there's more to this story[?]. If he doesn't want to communicate with anyone, I guess we'll never resolve the 968.net conundrum...

there is more to the story - i spoke with him a while ago at length - but no, he isn't going to be getting involved with the 968 community

Are you at liberty to share some of the additional story?

Since that was the first place I went to cut my 968 teeth, I would certainly like to know what it was, for lack of better terminology, abandoned...

I'm sure you can shed a little more light- heck, if he doesn't wish to be involved with any 968 communities anymore, let it all out!

I would have thought he could have at least turned the site over to someone who wanted to maintain it. But I'm not a smart man so what do I know!

not really - i can say that he said it was a personal thing - he was quite clear that he did not want to relinquish ownership or allow someone else to run it - he called it "a labor of love" that was just going to sit there - the bottom line was that he and it were effectively "done" - i respected that, and his desire not to talk about it further publicly

I'm pretty sure he relinquished ownership- last I checked, the domain name was no longer his. Maybe he registered it with his new company....

Either way, and forgive me if this sounds horrible, I lost a little respect for the man for letting 968.net go the way it did.

That said, I am glad Eric stepped up and created Forums and I am also glad he passed it on to you, Jay & Pete.

I agree, Bio. I was next to Ray at the photo op in front of the car museum at the last Hershey event he attended. He professed strong interest in reigniting .net, and then fell off the planet. If this was a "labor of love", it should not have been allowed to disintegrate - the loss of valuable information (such as my purchase thread ) is shameful.

And, absolutely, bless you Eric and now Flash, Jay, and Pete.

bio - the site is on auto-renew last time i checked - i agree it was a shame, but the data is not lost - there are tools that allow you to go back - also, i think there are a couple of clones of the database out there - the problem is that none of the information is searchable, and really wasn't even when the site was active

water under (over, whatever) the bridge - no sense in mourning the things lost - we have a lot more going on here now, and over 3 times the membership that site ever had, and we have crossed the halfway mark to the total post score of that site, and in a very short time - by all accounts, this site is already bigger than that one ever was

but we all remember our first car, first girlfriend, etc with unrealistic fondness too

To paraphrase Billy Joel, "We didn't start the fire..."

We've all moved on a long time ago. However, it would be rude to ignore a new thread on this topic, and so, once again, feelings get vented. No harm, no foul, and long live Forums.

Yep- definitely moved on. I am here and this is where I will stay.

At the end of the day, it matters not to me. I go home, I spend time with my amazing family and thank my lucky stars that I have what I have. And tonight, Bumblebee will get her new battery!

As did I, because I felt that he punished everyone with his lack of interest.

Tom- good .

Sorry for the bumblebee name- I couldn't think of anything better in a short period of time!

I do like the short bus though.

From here on out, my cab shall be lovingly referred to as "The Short Bus"!
