On my drive to work this morning I followed a Mangusta and while I was thinking how rarely one sees that car, a TVR ( Cerbera ). drove by in tne adjacent lane. What are the chances ?! Very unusual cars to see in this neck of the woods, and minutes apart ! The TVR had a right hand steering wheel set up . I do like like the looks of that car, the Mangusta on the other hand, not so much...

Not exactly the same thing, but Melva and I were walking through Doylestown, PA...a bright, sunny Sunday afternoon, no car show, nothing special going on...in the parking lot behind the library, BOOM!



Do you think we just notice these things more?

Last year about November, while filling up my tank a Porsche drove by completely covered with sheet of cardboard. This was one route 4 in teaneck or engle wood NJ. As many cars have headquarters in the area in Fort Lee NJ. It must have been so sort of proto type body design. I gave chase but lost it in the traffic.

I saw a Panoz Esperante recently after not having seen one in over 10 years. I used to think they were cool cars but now I don't think they've aged well at all, plus this one had very poorly fit body panels. Not sure if they're all like that, though...

On the drive from San Diego to Reno, which we do several times a year, we often encounter "mules" on the road. We saw the new Ford Escape, lots of Toyotas, and other various vehicles over the years because a lot of manufacturers test their prototypes in the Mojave Desert. A few trips ago we were passed by six Porsche Macan mules with Michigan plates. The black bodies appeared to be fiberglass, the front headlights were just stickers applied to the body to appear to be lights. All were bristling with antennas; the drivers all had on headsets and were communicating with the mother ship. Lots of what appeared to be telemetry monitoring various vehicle functions. It was very interesting.

Interesting that you didn't like the looks of the Mangusta. I'd always thought they were among the prettier cars ever made (well, in the top 20 or so, anyway), but I'd never seen one in person, only in pictures. Maybe it's one of those cars that just doesn't look nearly as good in real life as it does in print.

Close up I was not impressed , and it's not that think it's ugly or anything, just no "wow" factor to it. It was also a bland mid-dark grey and non metallic ( or had not been washed in a while ) so that might have also contributed to it..

Today I spotted what I could have sworn was an old Ferrari or Maserati but as I drove closer to it and both of us ended up stopped at a traffic light I realized that not only was the car not a Ferrari, or a Maserati, but I had no clue whatsoever what make it was ! Stunning vehicle though, the driver had his window open so I lowered my window, got his attention and asked him what the car is. Had to ask him twice because I did not understand what he said at first ; ISO GRIFO .. Well, that's a new one to me, never heard of that maker, much less the model so had to pull it up on the net . Photos below.

So one more car to add to the rare vehicles list of those I've seen actually being driven on the roads here...as opposed to seeing unusual cars in showrooms or at concours, or at coffee and cars GTGs. Other than the Mangusta mentioned in the original post, alongside the TVR Cerbera , and then a McLaren F1 ( yes I know it's not federalized and thus not US legal, but the dude was driving it on hwy 101 , nonetheless ) , a Jaguar XJ 220, and last, some car which looked like a UFO and to this day I can't figure out what that thing might have been .        

P.S. After I complimented his car, the guy said : " I like your Porsche also, very nice " . Not sure if he was just being courteous but given what he was driving, and thus clearly a man of distinction and classy car taste I'd like to think he really meant what he said , lol.

I did not ask him, but the info I pulled up on the car indicates they were made between 1965 and 1974. Several versions ( engines as well as some body style mods ) were produced during those years and I suspect this one was among the first generation, so guessing 65-67 ish, because the later models had very expansive hood scoops covering about 80% of the entire hood to accommodate the big block Corvette V8s which replaced the smaller V8s in the earlier models. Either way it's not a cheap car ; last year one was sold for $ 440,000 by an owner in New Jersey to somone in North Carolina. So " banditsc " - if the new owner crosses the state line southbound, keep an eye out for a grey one...

Not quite on the same scale, but the other day leaving work, I pulled up to a stop sign and there was an E55 Wagon sitting right next to a M5 Wagon. E55's and M5's are a dime a dozen in California, but the wagons are somewhat rare and I thought it was neat they were next to each other...the wife, not so impressed.

Today I ran accross a tiny roadster. Never seen one before. Didn't know what it was, but I managed to find it on the net: a Suzuki Cappuccino! Funny little thing, 0-100 km/h in 8 seconds and weighs 725 kg (under 1600 lbs). 3-cylinder turbocharged engine with intercooler.
