project list too long to remember - need help
#1

over the years i've undertaken a lot of projects. many of them have reached completion. some have not. some have been abandoned. some are being picked back up again.

the problem is that i have lost track. i am just about to get my car back, and have a chance to get in while things are apart and work out the rest of the details and design issues with a few projects. what i would like to know is what else i have forgotten or not thought of for new products or solutions.

here is the list of things, in no particular order of priority, that i am already working on to one degree or another, and hope to finish:

finished and awaiting production demand:

larger sway bars

rear shock conversion

rear sway bar links

glovebox repair kit

headlight ring repair kit

battery relocation kit

almost finished:

tiptronic chip

underbody aerodynamic kit

in prototype process:

fixed headlight fenders

cabriolet rear speaker enclosure

designed but not yet prototyped:

motor mounts

upper strut bearing mounts

transaxle panhard linkage

AC delete kit

in design phase:

improved oil cooler

stage 2 SC add-on

to be designed:

front tow hook for cars without bumper bar

hardtop luggage cover

new brake setup

splitter protector kit

what have i forgotten? i don't want to get into discussions of timelines or prices or anything like that right now. but, i do want to get this list finished, as i plan to crunch though things in short order, blast them all out, and then be done designing stuff.

the battery relocation kit was in the original list

glad you have the underbody aerodynamic kit almost done.. any single mph more I can squeeze out of the max speed / top end of this car is good news for what floats my boat - screw mid-range torque, make my car go 165 instead of 160 and I'll be a happy camper

ds968 - if you have the SC is DOES go 165 and more! Just don't try it as you will be sourcing a short block like I am right now

Someone said this is a street only kit in BIG BOLD LETTERS.....oh yea, it was Flash in the instructions, my bad.

Have you contacted rlips? He recently had the misfortune of a broken crank(!), and is in the process of doing a V8 swap, but hopefully his block is OK.

Wasn't there a tow hitch on the list at some point? And I seem to recall a tonneau cover and a zip-out cab window being worked on, although maybe you didn't mean for those to be "production" items? And don't forget the blinker fluid reservoir.

tonneau cover is already in production. you can get that on the D1R website.

zip out rear window can be had too. that one is going to be pricey though.

i never had a tow hitch on my list, as i don't think that is a good idea with these cars. people tend to overload the rear suspension, as they forget that the load capacity of the car is only a bit over 600lbs in hardtop form, including passengers. just because you can doesn't mean you should.

yup - still need a failure here so we can get one made. ironically i got a call on a local failed bow yesterday. so, this may now become reality.

I don't think this ever made your list, but should the distributor mounts be under consideration?

you mean the big housing at the rear of the distributor? if so, it isn't a difficult part to get made. it just won't be cheap. getting it scanned is the first part of the job. i think that has been done by somebody else. not sure what format it's in though. sending it out to be made is the easier part. the problem is going to be in determining how many to make, and then paying for it without anticipated sales already in place. it's really a fairly rare problem. i've only heard of a half dozen so far that could not be repaired. that doesn't bode well for a production item. neither does the fact that there are a bunch of them in wrecking yards. on top of that, with no track record on a new item, the OEM item, which is still available, is not so far out of line that people don't just go and buy one of those.

who knows? maybe enough demand will pop up. i had to have one hole on mine repaired. it just wasn't bad enough yet to justify replacement.

Flash,

Reading your latest post on the balance shaft belt issue gave me an idea ("Oh goody, another thing to work on" is I'm sure your first reaction...) - how difficult do you think it would be to duplicate the P9201 tool, if somebody would be willing to loan you one? Having borrowed one, I'm now highly skeptical of my ability to accurately tesnion the belt without it (thus my extreme skepticism of the benefit of attempting to periodically re-tension the belt). I realize the purpose of this thread wasn't to solicit ideas for new projects, but to me, this one really screams for a solution, as the tool is ridiculously expensive from the dealer, and getting a facsimilie into peoples' hands could save a lot of engines from thousands of dollars in repairs. Maybe it's just me, but I would prioritize this ahead of anything else on your list.

If Flash is unable to take something like this on, is there anybody else out there who might be able to come up with something?

I would gladly do that and a tool for the camshaft (9216 was it?) providing there was a sample to work from. A couple of each item for the USA probably wouldn't go amiss as there are a goodly number of guys doing their own work. Anything else I would be glad to participate.

Any P9201 owners out there willing to ship theirs across the pond so AJG can produce a duplicate? I know it's a lot to ask, and the shipping can't be cheap, but I for one would be glad to pitch in for the shipping cost to help enable the creation of an affordable, accurate, reliable belt tension measurement tool.
