Oil filter wrench? - Scott Collins - 02-14-2009

Hello everyone-

I am having trouble getting an oil filter off -that sucker is really on there...

- what size filter wrench do I need to remove an OE oil filter?

Thanks for the help! Cheers!

i always use a "slip type" - it's a band that self tightens, and uses a ratchet extension and ratchet to drive it - this allows you to get down at the bottom where you get leverage - i've never been a fan of the kind that fit over the end - i always seem to bugger the filter up that way, and still not get it off

Yah, I hear you. I already have that one though, and I still can't budge it...

I either get the proper socket to fit over the top, or I just pop a screwdriver through it and twist.

I would prefer to have the proper socket, but just don't know the size.

try tightening it first

try it when hot.

of course, don't get the oil on you...

Xrad-

I drained the oil out already and did not think the filter would be a problem - I guess I could heat it with a blow torch - I thought about that, but figured that head would cause expansion, which would only make it tougher to get off.

Flash - try tightening first, you mean to "wake it up"?

Thoughts?

exactly - works quite a lot

Scott,

I bought a socket for it before I changed to the canton. The socket says 76mm.

it's off...

Scott: heat softens the rubber seal...

Now when you put it back on, don't over-tighten like the last guy

and oil the rubber seal first

Scott, you gotta learn to control that temper.

of course, if you switch to the Canton filter, you won't ever have to do that again - many of us are running it, and LOVE it - absolutely zero issues after about 4 years - the old design had some snags a number of years ago, but the new one has been great
