Maybe wrong place to post this question but what is the purpose fitting NACA ducts? Lower underhood temps?

NACA Ducts were designed for Turbo cars. Some people like the style, but on a NA car there are better ways to move air through the engine compartment.

What was their purpose on the turbo?
The reason for asking is that I am, probably, going to make a carbon fiber hood and I would like to wether or not I should include the ducts in the design.

Best way to explain is photos.
First is a factory Turbo S (Pete Fitzpatrick, RS Barn)
Second is under the hood of a Factory Turbo RS (Matt D)

The left one gets fresh air to the air filter, the right one to the exhaust and turbo.

My right one keeps my power steering fluid reservoir nice and cool!

So mostly looks then (for a non turbo)...

Is the CF hood you plan on building going to be a one off or will you be making more to sell? Depending on the quality, i may be interested.

lol - here we go again - i'd love to see this get off the ground, especially with somebody else leading the charge - i kept hitting a brick wall, as the unit cost was always going to be somewhere above $1000 and required painting, so most people chose not to do that
if it fit like OEM though, and opened and closed like OEM (hinges and such, not pins) i'd also be interested, depending of course on final weight and pricing - i'd love to lose the 25 lbs that i estimated could be dropped - i just didn't like the cost to do it, and the lack of a guarantee of perfect finish

Initially I'll make only one and it will be a race, 4 pin style hood but with street finish. If it turns out ok I might make more of them and perhaps make OEM designs as well. However, an OEM style hood requires a lot more time to make, and also more carbon and epoxi, so I suspect they'll be very expensive.

yeah - that's kind of what i ran into - between the inlaid aluminum required for the latches and hinges, and the ribs and such to keep in in form, it got pretty nutty
that's why so far i have opted for going with fiberglass when i build the race car, and will go with the pin type - for 600 bucks instead of 1000, the only difference would be about 2 lbs - i can live with that
still, i would love to see a really good OEM style piece for the street car - i just can't justify the time and expense to get there
as for the naca ducts, and the original thread, yes, not really functional on an NA car, and in fact let a lot of unwanted air in there - probably never notice it until you hit about 120 though, so if you like the look, then go for it

I think an OEM function is achievable without to much hazzle. When making a race hood one could reinforce it in the necessary places and then let the next guy make attachments for hinges and such. However, an OEM look will be a tougher issue to deal with.
Fiberglass is really quite hard to beat function wise, the only real downside is the looks, at least when we're talking about hoods and stuff. But then again, looks is very important (to me at least...).
I will probably not make the hood with ducts as they could be put there in the future should I need them.
