Looking for an upper timing belt rear cover - barth7 - 02-22-2009

That may be confusing, but part number 944.105.179.08 Apparently, it's NLA. I have found a couple, but thet are really expensive. Anybody got one around?

Mine is on there and usable, but the two lower bolt holes are messed up and I plan to replace, at least at next belt change.

Thanks for any help.

try pelican classifieds.
I am pretty sure you can use one from a 944.
You should be able to get one for under $40.

Only the S2. The 8V cars are different. This one is apparently NLA, with a list of $1600. I found them from junkyards to parts places from $350 to $1300.

Maybe I'm reading your part number wrong, but the one you have listed is shown at around $110.00 list from Porsche. I would call Sunset in Oregon and ask to speak with Jeff in Porsche Parts. He'll be able to get you a definitive answer.

If that doesn't help, I'm pretty sure you can "spruce up" the old one if it is plastic.... I've used a two-part epoxy system before to rebuild some mounting holes in plastic pieces. I would think the only trick would be to find a suitable two-part epoxy that can handle the heat from the engine. And if the piece you are talking about is metal, perhaps a local machine shop can help "rebuild" the mounting areas.

Perhaps you can post a picture showing where the problem areas are?

It's cast AL, not plastic. Where the bottom 2 bolts, numbers 999 074 031 02, are is stripped out. It is defeinitely not $110.

On Pelican: http://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin/smart/...-105-179-09-OEM

I sent an email to Bob McCarthy at Sunset. They are where I normally get parts from. Also have an email in to Paragon.

Ahhh! Your text in your other posts lists "-08" as the last two digits, not "-09". That is what caused my discrepancy.

Still wouldn't mind seeing a picture of yours to see if we can figure out something.... Non-mechanical, NLA $1000 parts should get some focus!

08 is NLA and has been superseded by 09. Not sure what the diff is. Where did you get the $110 price from?

I don't have a pic of mine, but the problem is that it's cast AL and where those bolts go through, it is just falling apart. I am missing a lot of the material on one of them, the other I miostly have. It can be fixed by taking it all off and getting somebody that knows what they are doing to braze and grind it back into shape. I can weld somewhat decently, but was never 100% successful with brazing (admittedly working on very dirty parts). I don'y have access to that stuff anymore, so it really doesn't matter. If I do buy another, I will fix this one and keep it as a spare, so anybody that needs one can check with me.

Bart-

The list I have is from a few years back- say 2002ish. It doesn't even have the -09 part listed.

Bummer about the correct part being so expensive.

And yes, I agree about the aluminum issues... PITA to work with that stuff, so I hear. Unfortunately, I've got no skills (or experience) with welding.

$757 from Sunset.

I think I may have found one for $140. Waiting to hear back.

Ordered one for $45. He is checking to see if he has any more.

I need one urgently. Please advise on where I can find one. Mine already felt apart where the bolts go. Thank God the pieces never got caught on the timing belt.

Thanks in advance for any help!

I forget the name of the place I got mine from now - a dismantler somewhere. They were recommended to me by either Chuck or Jason at Paragon, so you can check with them.
