I am curious if the 968 was available with an 18 inch wheel option - trying to see if I can justify using 18 inch rims on my race car. This size needed to be available as an option from a dealer or the factory to have a shot at legally using them.
Found some nicely priced Fikse wheels at 18 inches.

I'm 99% sure that there was no factory 18" wheel option for the 968. If I recall the factory warned agaisnt 18" wheels. The possible exception is the factory Turbo cars. I believe that Pete's BBS wheels are 18's.

The 968 coupe and cab came with 16" wheels as standard, with 17" wheels as an option. I believe the ROW Sport and CS models came with 17" wheels as standard, but they could have been an option as well.
The 968 Turbo S and 968 Turbo RS came with 18" wheels. The Turbo S used 3-piece 18" Speedlines and I think you had a choice of 18" wheels on the RS- there's a PDF here in the archives listing the specs on the TS and TRS showing the wheels.
Really not sure if you could order a regular coupe or cab with 18's, but I highly doubt you could. So my guess would be you are limited to 17".
"porsche" (Rader) posted a pic of factory 17" C2 Turbo wheels in magnesium- I'd rather have them anyday over any 18". Also note that the 18" Speedlines, while stunningly beautiful especially on the 968, are pigs in the weight department. Not really good for reducing unsprung weight.
Of the standardly available factory 17" wheels that came on a 968, I do believe the 993 Cup versions were the lightest. There's a couple of wheel threads on here with weight info. Check 'em out.

No 18"s in North America.
Standard are the 16" (code 402)
Optional on 92 to 94.5 were the option code 403 17" light alloy wheels (some call them Cup1s) they cost $1352
Optional on 94.5 to 95s were 17" cup wheels (code 398) with the more rounded style (some call them Cup2s) they cost $1378.
You could order all the wheels in matching body color, code XD9, for $1079
You could order Rim caps with a painted Porsche crest, code XD4, for $208/$214.
That said, I bolted a set of OEM 18"s technology rims from a 996 right on my old cab and had zero issues other then a rough ride.

Ahhh - this forum rocks! Great info and most appreciated. I am definitely limited to 17s then. Darn - a set of 18 Fikse wheels on eBay for about $1000 - smoking hot deal.

if you are trying to stay within "stock" spec, yes you are limited
however, most divisions give you tires and wheels open
there is a very real tradeoff of grip versus weight - still not sure which one i prefer

the early 17" wheels were also available throughout the run, as were some other widths

Ben is also limited to width. He will almost need custom 17" for his series. We are working on it

I would recommend the Forgeline ZX3R's. They come in 17" and they can make any width you want. I run the 18" version of these and I love them.

Jim, that is the exact rim I am now considering running on my 968CS for the track, likely in 18" dia, maybe 17". Will be running with R specs. Do you mind if I ask some questions?
<b>1</b>. How did you decide on that rim vs others?
<b>2</b>. Do you mind if I ask what rim size, offset and tire sizes combination you recommend or run?
<b>3</b>. Have you had any issues with finish, durability, or the weight of the 18" vs 17" dia?
<b>4</b>. What made you go 18" vs 17"?
<b>5</b>. Did you examine the titanium option for the bolts/fittings to shave further rotational mass and weight outright?
<b>6</b>. Has anyone else got any views on the ultimate track wheel we can actually still buy (excluding carbon fibre rims...too fragile for me) in 18" or 17" and I wont run spacers?
I currently run 17" Factory Cup II's. Need a second set as thinking of using the factory wheels with street tyres to get to the track, and keep them pristine and white!!
Thanks.

CCWs, OZ, Enkei all make wheels and should have those sizes covered.

1. How did you decide on that rim vs others?
Forgeline is located here in Dayton, so they are quite popular among racers in this area. I've toured their facility, and witnessed first hand what a great job they do in making these wheels.
2. Do you mind if I ask what rim size, offset and tire sizes combination you recommend or run?
Mine are 18", in widths of 8.5" front and 10" rear. Those are the maximum widths allowed for the PCA stock classes, which is why I chose them. I run Hoosier R6's, 255/35/18 front and 285/30/18 rear. Without the rules constraint I would be running 10" widths all around with 285's.
I can't remember the offsets, but Forgeline has all of that information. Forgeline's owner, Dave Schardt has raced a 944 Turbo S for years, and has made wheels for countless 944/951/968's, so you won't have any problems with fitment.
3. Have you had any issues with finish, durability, or the weight of the 18" vs 17" dia?
No issues. The wheels have been extremely reliable and durable, surviving constant curb jumping, and occasional wheel to wheel contact.
4. What made you go 18" vs 17"?
All the fast guys around here run 18"s, so I chose them in an attempt to match the "fast" setup. It worked.
5. Did you examine the titanium option for the bolts/fittings to shave further rotational mass and weight outright?
I don’t remember that being an option when I got my wheels back in 2006. If I was buying them today I'd definitely look into it.

In my opinion smaller wheels are almost always better, as they are likely to be lighter (if the same manuf.), but more important they let you use all the gears on track and give you therefore more traction. As I started racing 2 years ago I went right away for the biggest wheels/tires that would fit on my S2, but I went back from 18 to 17 inch because it would allow me to use the gears better and be able to use 5th gear on the straight with the very long TurboS gearbox I was using instead of using only the first 4 gears on the Zandvoort track. Times improved with around 1,5 seconds on the 4,3km. track.
