Mechanic/help near Thousand Oaks, SoCal? - josephsc - 06-30-2009
A friend of mine visiting from Sweden (userid: sweanders) is stuck with my car far away from my location due to coolant leak.
Does anybody know of a good mechanic (or nearby enough to assist) near his current location? He is at Newbury Park, California (Southern California, very close to the city of Thousand Oaks)

I'm about 30 minutes from TO and unfortunately there are no shops that will touch a 68. There are a few shops that work on 911's, but they don't service 68's.
The only option in Ventura Co. is the dealer, [see Rusnak Westlake], which is about 10 minutes from Thousand Oaks.
This is why I do most of my own work. For major repair I use Schneider's listed above. Schneider's is over an hour from Thousand Oaks. I'm less than an hour from Santa Barbara and it cost over $200 to tow the car up there.

I got my friend out to Rusnak in Westlake. And he got there on a tow truck at 5:15pm (45 minutes before closing). And fortunately, I managed to catch Flash on the phone and he diagnosed the problem right away (and I'm ashamed that I didn't catch it -- because the symptoms were exactly that, but I was too preoccupied with another potential problem).
Anyways, the problem was a broken Heater Control Valve (HCV). And after a briskful drive highway 1 on a warm summer day, that would be the main culprit. A mechanic (Mark) at Rusnak was kind enough to put in a bypass with a piece of hose over the HCV, and got my friend (Anders) back on the road within one hour.
Problem solved -- and it was easily solved thanks to the knowledge available at communities like this!

My solution was to go ahead and change the HCV, and keep the old one as a spare. I hate breaking down when I'm out for a joy ride...Just like the DME relay, a simple easy spare to keep you rolling with a grin.
