Any tips before windshield replacement? - josephsc - 07-13-2009

I just developed a big crack in my windshield. Before I go in for a replacement, is there any "gotcha's" I should worry about (aside from insisting on OEM Sekurit?)

And can the original airbag warning sticker be saved somehow?

Good luck finding one other than special order from a Porsche dealer. They simply are not available from regular sources

Joseph-

If you have the PET, check it out. I know there are one or more pages with 968-specific decals/labels/stickers. That one might be in there.

EDIT- Check out Main Group 0 of the PET, specifically illustration 1-05. I believe you need #7.... P/N 944 701 422 02. Give Sunset a call and verify/see if they have it.

If I were a betting man, I would say it is available due to the liability issue and the need to have the warning visible if a windshield is ever replaced.

Also, right after I bought my 944S2 back in 96ish, Porsche North America sent me a letter with two airbag warning labels for installation on the visors. Doesn't really help with the window warning label but just a bit of info...

make sure they use the right glue stuff (black nasty gooey junk from a tube) and remove the old stuff - also, because of the angle, have them mask off the sheet metal down at the bottom in the cowl, especially at the corners - it is very easy to scratch it up when trying to remove it (ask me how i know)

Thanks for the tip!

BTW, I forgot to mention that this particular warning label is unusual -- it's in French! (because of this car's Canadian origins...)

Joseph-

Have the exact same sticker in my cab ('94) and it was not a Canadian car - it was delivered to a US dealership and sold to a US customer.

If you're picky enough to desire keeping the airbag sticker, I guess it would be a waste of time to suggest a 944 windshield with a thicker rubber cushion. I understand it works just fine.

make sure your OEM is not used or preinstalled (Yes, even from the dealer) Should come with plastic outer edge surround with a double 'U' channel which the rubber windshield seal sides into.

Most likely, you will only be able to get the antenna version.

Be careful when loosening the lower windshield clamps. They ONLY turn in one direction - CLOCKWISE. there is an internal spring lock on a cam screw. Turning it raises the clamp, and keep turning it to lower the clamp. The whole mechanism is held in place by a posterior U clip, very hard to reach, so don;t break them.

funny - i don't have any of that stuff on either of the cabs

I have three cabs with OEM windshelds, and only this cab has the sticker (and it's hidden behind the rear view mirror). It might be a '92 thing....

It took three weeks, but I replaced the windshield. Used Safelite AutoGlass, for a total installed price (at my house) of $860.47. True cost to me was just my insurance deductible -- thanks to Progressive. They didn't have any problems locating OEM Sekurit windshield with correct gasket, except they needed time.

wow - that's pretty pricey, but maybe not too far out after figuring in their markup and using full list on the glass

Any tips before windshield replacement? - josephsc - 08-07-2009

Yea, but my share was just the deductible -- $100.

understood - for particular reasons, i opted not to go that route, and felt it was just easier to pay for it - funny how the cash price is so much less than the insurance price - i guess that's why our rates are so high
