man, how things have changed; just 20 years ago it would have been a Lada pulling over a Trabant...or an ox cart

Yes, very likely a true photo. The police are well funded, and they're quite prone to pulling over people who look like they can pay their fines on the spot!

rxter, the Trabant was actually made in Germany (east). They had a 2-stroke engine. Mix your own fuel out of heating oil stock (something like 50 parts oil, one part gasoline). The outer body pieces were made of plastic. Noisy, smoky, and plain by western standards, but cheap to own and maintain and thus very practical.
I doubt they were used by Russian police. In Moskow they have all kinds, Mercedes, BMW, Land Rover -- and apparently at least one Porsche? In small towns usually older Lada and Niva (Russian Jeep). Police is very important social position and comes with company car!

My wife's first car was a Trabant, she had a very minor accident with it and I was able to see / feel one of the damaged panels.. unless I'm mistaken and/or my memory fails me ( it was back in 1974 after all..) I could have sworn the panels did have a very light plastic coating on the outside but the main composition seemed to be pressed carboard. Yes, like pressed cardboard, it was actually plastic-coated cotton fiber.

fun stuff. well, her next car was a Skoda, certainly a step above and then the next was a MBZ 450SL .. no cotton fiber there although that one did use just a tad more gas.. [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif[/img]
