Pedal to the metal, slight hesitation -
ZermatSilver968 - 08-13-2009
Hi all,
Overall my 968 is running fine....starts hot or old immediately, idles fine goes till fuel cutout without any prob, but have two minor problems I would like to solve. 1) When I am in the low rev range <3000 there is an slight hesitation when I put the pedal to the metal. 2) With low driving speed, say below 70 KM (around 40 mph) the engine isn't running constantly. There is this small jitter.
Anyone experienced this before, any idea if the two are related? Since its an ROW car I can't do the engine light routine!
Dan

check your distributor cap - contacts could be pitted
check your spark plugs - they might be loose
clean your MAF using MAF cleaner - do not touch the wire - do not start the engine until it is fully dry

Thanks! I'll start there!

I also had a hestitation when accelerating, but otherwise never had an issue. I replaced the following and the problem is now gone:
Distributor,
Rotor,
Plug Wires,
Plugs,
Reference mark sensor
I would replace the Distributor, Rotor, Plug Wires and plugs regardless...It doesn't cost much and it makes the car run smoother.
Good luck in finding the issue.
And f you find a MAF cleaner please tell me the name, because I can't Find any here in the Netherlands. What brand do you guys in the US use?

I too had the same issue and now dont. Replaced rotor/cap.
Doing spark plugs next, just because.
What is this "reference mark sensor" you speak of?

we use CRC MAF cleaner here - remove MAF, spray it on, let it dry, reinstall - minutes

Just a moment ago picked up the parts and replaced rotor, cap...also got new plugs. Checked before I left the shop both rotor and cap if part numbers were right....forgot to check the plugs....Ordered WR7 DTC 4 point got WR7 DCX single point. Annoying those mixups.
Tomorrow I'll pick up some MAF cleaner. Because the airfilter was partially gone I expect dirt build up on the wire too.
Might be worth checking the working ingredients of CRC MAF cleaner. If I can't find cleaner I could use the raw stuff depending what it is.

Update- Oke, looked around. CRC products are available in the Netherlands. What we are looking for is Kontakt Spray. There are various types, but assume non aggressive contact spray should do it.
Also found an message from Ford telling their mechanics to use Kontakt Spray or carburetor cleaner.

i would not use carb cleaner - it is too strong, and could easily mess up the plastic

It is a sensor that sits just above the flywheel. It does something with the timing, but I am not 100% clear on it's function. All I know is if it doesn't work the engine does not run well...and sometimes not at all. It is rather expensive. It takes about half an hour and lots of swearing to install.

Flash, is your CRC bottle called Kontakt 60? I see about 25 different types, some also too strong. On the spark plugs, any recommendations? I have to exchange them tomorrow anyway.

carb cleaner is fine on the spark plugs
MAF Sensor Cleaner is definitely not the same as their Contact Cleaner here - i have both

Both sparks and cap replaced! Point 1 whereby the car slightly hesitates is solved! It picks up smoothly now and the engine note also sounds better. Point 2, little jitter almost gone.
Need to look at the MAS how much its contaminated, if at all. The plug cables which are by the look of it are 17 years old could cause current symptom but less likely. I'll follow the course easiest / cheapest so MAS cleaning first.
When you start these kind of investigations you always find your next activity. Saw during the plug swap the cam cover sweets a little bit of oil in all spark plug holes. Fortunately this fits into my planned cam chain vario guide inspection. Not sure yet if its worth the effort replacing the chain and vario guides myself. I'll revisit thoughts later.....first things first!
