Hi all,
I have a 1994 968 that ran well about a month ago. Since I was out of town for a few weeks and then came back I have been having trouble getting the car to start.
When I sprayed starting fluid to the intake the car starts right away and then dies after a few seconds later. It would start very time if I sprayed more fluid and just kept dying.
Could it be the fuel issue especially the fuel pump? The gas tank is full so I do not expect much condensation in there. The fuel filter is new.

Check the DME relay in the fuse box as it controls the fuel pump. You can search here to find the DIY on building a bypass cable that allows you to temporarily hard wire the relay forcing the pump to run. If the car starts it's the relay - very common weak point. If you have fuel being supplied and it still doesn't start you can pull the fuel rail connection and see if there is actually fuel making it to the rail. Be carefull as it's high pressure and you will need a bucket to catch the fuel that comes out. If you have fuel there then we're off the the world of electrics [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif[/img]

+1 on DME relay. #1 reason that 968's refuse to start (other than dead battery). Don't leave home without a spare, they are only $20 and 2 seconds to replace in the fuse box.

Don't forget to try the DIY jumper of the DME first so you can confirm you have a faulty relay. That being said it is a good idea to always have a spare anyway.

Thanks DaveN and Ceenit for your help! I put the new DME relay in last night and the car started right up.
Another question for you guys. The fuel pump is kind of noisy. Is it time to replace?

a noisy pump is not a problem at all. only irritating. But with a new pump you don't hear it any more....
You could check the presure from the system if the pump does his work properly.
But the advise is to wait a little longer before replacing it.
