Has anyone read the Aug. Panorama story 'Making Lemonaide'?

Panorama - 94SilverCab - 09-11-2009

Chris Lennon (Colorado Cab) is a member here and an occasional poster. He and I have twin 968 Cabs.

I hope that someone will help him find the perfect $500 968 for next year's race.

Nice plug for 968's at the end of the article Chris !

I usually get to meet up with Chris when he comes to town and I had the pleasure of hearing that story "straight from the horses mouth" before it was published. They had a blast at the event and it was a fun read.

Glad you all enjoyed it. It was an absolutely terrific event. The 24 Hours of LeMons, for those who didn't read the article, is what we're referring to here. Highly recommended.

Now, c'mon...find me that $500 968 that I can enter next year. I actually set fast lap in our 944 in Reno, so look out in a 968.

Actually, I am planning on managing a 4-car team for next year's event...we already have acquired two 944s and two Audis, each under $500, that should do just fine.

Panorama - Anchorman - 09-15-2009

I was just at a DE event at Watkins Glen and there was a 3-series BMW coupe that raced in a similar class. Everything spent on the car - including the car - (except for safety equipment) had to total less than $500. The car certainly looked like a rolling wreck - when I first came up behind it on the straight in the "boot" section, I almost jammed on my brakes, not comprehending what was in front of me. Got used to it, though, and it ran pretty well. Missed the Pano article, though.

Panorama - flash - 09-15-2009

the only concern i have with the concept of the series is safety - i have a hard time imagining that a car is safe for less than $500 - you could easily spend that much on suspension bushings - do you toss the car when you have to spend money?

Panorama - Anchorman - 09-15-2009

Ah, Flash, you "flash" read my post. Expenditures on safety equipment does not count towards the $500 limit. I imagine, though, to answer the obvious next question, that you cannot upgrade the suspension in the interests of "safety".

Panorama - flash - 09-16-2009

i wasn't talking about safety equipment per se - i don't think of bushings and such as safety equipment - that would be seats, belts, harnesses, yada yada - however, bad bushings can easily be as unsafe as a torn harness

do they let you change that kind of stuff (bushings, brakes, et all) outside the limit?

Brakes are safety equipment, and thus exempt from the $500 limit. Bushings would count toward the $500 limit, so it would be the team's choice whether to do those or not. A good team has a good mechanic who would have checked out this sort of thing in advance.

After several of these events, safety has not proven to be a big problem. Yes, there have been incidents with things breaking, but not way beyond what you might expect in any other form of racing. Remember - these cars aren't going quite as fast as cars costing 100x as much.

Panorama - flash - 09-16-2009

my concern is that you get a car, the bushings look "ok" - you set it up - you start racing - a bushing goes south - if you were already at the $500 limit, can you fix it, or do you need to toss the car?

Panorama - Mark - 09-16-2009

here is one entry from the Northern Virginia Porsche guys (although the car is a BMW)

Depends what the race stewards see, I suppose.
