What ET should I have? - firefish - 11-25-2009

I ran across an ad today for Cup 2 design wheels but 18 instead of 17. Front is 8,5x18 and rear is 10x18. The seller didn't know the ETs (he'll check this evening) but I need to know what ET I need. Has anyone a 8,5/10x18 combo that works and if so, what ETs do you have?

i've never seen or heard of a 993 Cup wheel in an 18 - please send us pics

the 18x10 rear i have is an ET of 52 - it cannot go any lower without rubbing - it could go a bit higher

the 18x9 front i have is an ET of 57 - it cannot go in either direction on stock spring diameter without rubbing

EinpressTiefe or Insertion Depth - it's german for offset

you'll find the offset expressed in an embossed mark on the back of most rims, and even near the valve stem on the front of some - it will say ET"XX" (with whatever the ET is for that rim in place of the "XX")

Ok, got the numbers.

Front 8.5x18 ET 52 : gives me the same inboard clearance and the extra width is all outwards, me thinks this should be ok (from memory).
Rear 10x18 ET 47 : gives me 5 mm less inboard clearance and 20 mm less clearance on the outboard side. This MIGHT be ok, thoughts?

wow - those are indeed the 993 Cup wheels - cool - never saw them in an 18 before

47 won't work if your car is lowered at all (unless maybe you run a narrow tire) - i have a 285/35-18 Bridgestone S0-3 - with my ET52 i have exactly 3mm of clearance at the outside with 2 degrees of negative camber - if i reduce that negative camber much at all, i will rub - i also have no rubber bushings anywhere that would allow that clearance to shift - if i had rubber in there, it would rub

the 52 up front will fit, but will be very close to the outside

Thanks for the clarification. The numbers you guys were talking about sounded like offsets, but I wasn't familiar with the acronym.
