Opinions wanted on Cabin/interior cover - 968kid - 01-06-2010

Looking for feedback/reviews from owners of those cabin/interior covers (not tonneau). How easy are they to put on/take off. What are the benefits, drawbacks. Why would I spend money on this when I could just put the top up? Which prevents heat buildup better cabin cover or cabrio top? Where did you get yours, is Automotion the only game in town?
Any and all info would be greatly appreciated.

the cabin covers i think you are talking about (the kind you essentially just throw over the cabin) don't hold a lot of heat, as they are not sealed or anything - the top will hold heat more

however, where the cover will allow the heat to escape, it will also allow moisture to enter, whereas the top will prevent that

double edged sword

the tonneau i make is similar to the cover with respect to heat and moisture, but is more secure in wind - it is definitely more expensive, and probably more difficult to use if you don't just leave it in place

Yes, I saw your tonneau in another thread and it is nice. Makes me think of British racing in the 50's and 60's. Had one on a Jeep and a 1600 MGA. Very cool look and feel however always struck me as contrary to the convertible philosophy. I was more looking for something for when you leave the car on a hot sunny day and want to protect interior from the rays and cut down on leg and back broiling upon re-entry.

yeah- one main purpose was to keep the interior clean, and the seats cool - we do a paso robles wine run every year, and it can get very hot very windy and quite dusty - i liked having the top down, but not all the dust in the car, and being in shorts a lot, i didn't want to continually fry - the tonneau fixed that

also, the tonneau allows me to leave the top down while driving in much colder weather, thereby extending my convertible driving season

i think both of those are in line with the convertible philosophy

by the way, it rolls back to behind the seats, so you can still have the cabin open when you want

i'm not trying to sell a tonneau either, as i really did it for myself, and making it for others is just something i do on demand - when i designed it though i kept in mind all the things i like about top down driving and all the things i don't - i won't even own a hardtop car, so i think i qualify as a true ragtop man

Ah, thanks Jay...968Kid, no need to message...here's everything you need to know!

I absolutely love the cockpit cover. I do have plans on getting Flash's tonneau as well since it's for driving while attached. The cockpit cover is only for parking protection.

The cockpit cover goes on very easily. I roll it up, fold it in half and throw it in the trunk. I put in on almost everytime I park somewhere to keep dust, bird poop, and sun out of the car. It will repel a light mist as it is made from the same stuff the car covers are. It velcros around the mirrors and through the door handles on the sides and then goes under the wiper blades up front and has felt covered metal tabs that you stick "in the trunk" for the rear, meaning you do have to open the trunk to "install it" but you do so anyways since that's it's home when not in use.

those things are pretty convenient - i almost bought one a while back

when i made the comment about that cover letting moisture in, i meant interior condensation and such - it is set up to do a pretty good job of keeping out mist and such, presuming it isn't too windy

Thanks guys, I appreciate all the opinions. I'm going to pull the trigger on the cover. Sooner or later I will probably also get the tonneau if they are still available. They are pretty cool.

I have the "Automotion" gray cover that I'll use when the top is down and I'm parking for a little while and I want sun protection and a (very) moderate level of security. I have the tonneau, which I expect to use when I've been driving alone with the top down. I also have a complete car cover which I use primarily before predicted snow storms.

hahaha - welcome to the club. I've been at it for 2 years now and the list has not gotten any shorter even though I've checked off a number of items.

Back on topic my solution is pretty simple. Park in the shade, but not under a tree, and through a couple of beach blankets over the seats. Looks ratty as hell, which helps to keep the rif-raf away (or so I like to think). If I can't find decent shade and I'll be away for >15 minutes I spend the extra 3 and put the top up.

3 min? that's pretty quick - do you use the boot cover?

this is something i have to train dad to do more - i am already seeing signs of degradation of the headliner on the white car from him putting down the top and not using the boot cover - i'll have to replace it when i get the car back

FYI, they are really cool, but they are a tight fit if you have a roll bar, I do like how mine protects the interior when I have the top down.
