ok so my OEM suspension is ready to fall on the sword... when 130K miles YOU reach, ride as good YOU will not, hmmm??
I am kind of a suspension n00b. I think I understand what a torsion bar is. People say Konis are A Good Thing. I also remember Dan got a killer setup a few years back
http://www.968forums.com/index.php?showtopic=3777&st=20 .
Soooo.. I would like a quality setup that won't break the bank. What is the value option, something that I'm not throwing money at, yet is very good --> excellent quality?
As far as my preferences, I'm currently on worn out stock suspension, so why don't we say 10-20% stiffer than stock. I know that sounds soft, but i have to keep my girlfriend happy.
TIA homiez
oh other details:
* relatively recent alignment (couple years ago, really good job by the shop)
* 17" twist wheels
* stock ride height

A popular choice is KW Variant 3. I do not have personal experience with these, but from what I hear they give you the best of both worlds. Good on a track and managable on the road.

RSBarn has a good suspension package. Nothing but positive comments to share.

I think the Koni SPORTS on soft are around 15-20% stiffer than stock as I recall. Cheapest thing to do is add these, but it won't be a killer system, just much better.

for that kind of setup, i would run koni yellows with a 200lb spring up front, and koni yellow shocks on 1/2 turn from full soft in the rear - add in M030 sway bars
of course, the lower and upper braces will make it all work much better

Koni also has a 25% off sale right now.

I have plans to get the M030 kit, and both braces in the next month as this years upgrades but the coilover must wait until this winter. I noticed Flash recomments 200 lbs springs but that just seems awfully light for the front of our cars or is this specifically to get a very comfy ride? I want more of a street/DE feel so I was thinking 350 in the front.
Yes I have searched this to death and it's soooo subjective I still can't get an exact answer on what to order but the Koni yellows seem to be at least one common denominator.

if you go 350 in the front, you will HAVE to increase the rear spring rate - that is the line in the sand for most people
anything over about 225 up front, and you cross the line - that means you either change torsion bars, or add coils in the rear, and as soon as you do that, you can forget all about the konis
koni yellows do not handle 350 well either - that is really the limit for them - i had them on there, and the ride on the street was not fun - that is exactly why i went with the double adjustable koni hydraulic struts (at about twice the cost of the yellows)
i would not mix and match different brands of gas shocks and struts
i specced 200 because he wanted 10-20% - stock is 160 - the math did the rest
(yes, dan has konis up front, and is running 250s, and is the exception, but he has a one-of-a-kind rear hydraulic setup that was NOT cheap, so as to add the 90# helper and not jack the rear end up, as almost all rear coilover kits do)

KW variant 3. Hands down. Im runnin em right now, and love em. Theyre about 2300 for a set if I remember right. Might want to do bushings, sway bars, etc while your in there. I got a set of Koni's sitting in the shelf collecting dust. Werent nothin compared to the KW's. The KW's are soft when driving normal, but they perform when you want them to...every time. Most the other aftermarket setups, ride like covered wagons. Great for track, but not so much for the street.

hmmm - what torsion bar size? were they reindexed to relieve the rate?

Stock bar. Yes, had to be reindexed. 340 on front I believe. Not sure specifics on sways. Forget specs, they were on the car when I bought it. Defnitely not stock. I wanna say weltmeister, but I think those were on my 87'.

The 51. The 68 is gettin the same KW setup this year sometime. I like em enough to buy another set. One thing to keep in mind I guess when ordering KW's, is youll probably have to have them shipped from Germany. Usually none in stock for our cars this side of the pond. Could be different now I guess. been a year or so. The 87' is my 951 donor car. My 3.0 is a 86'.

i know of a few people who have tried them, with mixed reviews - they are also about twice as expensive as the koni yellow setup, and if somebody were only looking for 10-20%, i don't think they will be taking full advantage of the KW, even if they have better capability

Yeah, the variant 3's, might be a lil too stiff for his liking. Not sure if the KW "street comfort" are available for our cars. Maybe Ive just gotten used to it. Doesnt seem that stiff to me. Thye polybronze bushings make it feel stiff for sure tho. How much is a set of konis with springs? The KW is a complete coilover/strut in one.

about $1000 for the struts with springs
a bit more than half that if you do the conversion yourself
